Systems of Documentation
In order to document correctly, you must find and use detailed
information on the system of documentation you are using. The
following sources provide that information. Unless otherwise
noted, all are on permanent reserve at Burling Library; ask for
them by call number at the circulation desk. Many of the general
sources are also available at the College Bookstore.
General sources:
- Fulwiler, Toby, Alan R. Hayakawa, and Cheryl Kupper. The
College Writer's Reference. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice
Hall, 1996.
- This handbook, recommended by many tutorial professors and
by the Writing Lab, offers detailed descriptions of the MLA,
APA and Chicago style formats, and shorter ones of several of
the scientific systems of documentation.

English Handbook. 2nd ed. Glenview, IL: Scott Foresman, 1982.
- This book, often required in tutorials and other courses,
gives general descriptions of both the MLA and APA systems of
