The Intern is to provide assistance to, and work under the supervision of, Erik Sanning, the Theatre Dept. Technical Director. Duties will include assisting in the documentation, planning, building, and implementation of all technical elements required in the production of all department and departmentally supported performances (Public Events, Open Spaces etc). Assignments will be given at the discretion of the Technical Director. Design assignments are assigned dependent upon the status and direction of the Intern’s theatrical design portfolio.
The Design Technology Intern is required to be in residence for twelve weeks of each semester, a total of 24 weeks. The work schedule will be a regular, 8am to 5pm, 40 hours a week schedule. All design portfolio work is to be completed outside of these hours. The Intern will begin work one week before classes start in the fall term. In the spring semester, the Intern will begin his/her residency the Monday of the first day of classes. The Intern will not be in residence for fall or spring break.
The Intern will receive a $12,000 stipend to be paid monthly for the months in residence. It is the responsibility of the Intern to arrange with the Treasurer any and all tax deduction requirements.
Interns are responsible for having their own insurance. During working hours, the student is covered under workman’s compensation. As a representative of the Theatre Department faculty and staff, the Intern will be issued a staff ID card for college services and parking.
Internship Requirements
The 5th year intern residency provides an opportunity for a design technology student to have a “real world” transitional experience in Technical Direction. The successful candidate should have experience in scenic construction, scenic rigging, scenic welding, light rig and focus and lighting technology. Skills in computer aided drafting, production budgeting processes and planning are preferred but not required. The successful applicant needs to have worked in the scene shop on Theatre Student Staff for a minimum of two years.
Internship Application
A letter of application should be submitted to P. Gordon, Theatre Department, by the beginning of Spring break. Your letter should articulate the level of skills learned through theatre student staff and class work to prepare you for the internship and the value of the internship to your future career goals. The internship is awarded no later than April 15th in the spring term.
