OPEN SPACE PRODUCTIONS

audition information | open space guidelines | non-departmental productions

The purpose of the Open Space Productions is to give interested and qualified individuals the opportunity to produce theatrical events of their own initiative. While no form is dictated, these productions are expected to have some theatrical merit. The Theatre Department faculty strongly supports the concept of Open Space Productions as a creative outlet for students and/or staff. In order to facilitate the coordination of this program, the following procedures will be enacted.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE:
  1. Application must be made in writing to the Theatre Department faculty at least one semester in advance of the production. Applications are available in the Fine Arts Office.
  2. The faculty will review all applications for each semester and select the open space productions on the basis of directorial qualifications and production merit. The number of open space productions will be limited each semester due to the Theatre DepartmentŐs production budget and the production calendar.
  3. Upon selection for an Open Space Production, one must abide by the following production procedure.
PRODUCTION PROCEDURE:
  1. Each production will be allotted a maximum of $100.00 from the Theatre Department budget. Depending upon the production, you should be prepared that royalties may be a big part of your budget. That includes proration for any materials currently in the theatre stock (muslin, lumber, paint, etc.). The Theatre Department allocation does not preclude the possibility of attaining funds from other sources. (In regard to theatre funds, buying procedures will be determined by the Technical Director of the Theatre).
  2. These productions are not to be considered a part of the regular Theatre Department season, but rather a work of individual initiative. As such, paid theatre assistants are not required to aid in the production nore are students enrolled in crafts or performance labs. Work for all aspects of the production must be on a volunteer basis.
  3. Scheduling of performance dates and locations must be made in cooperation with the Theatre Department and is subject to their approval.
  4. Open Space Productions will not take precedence over and must not interfere with regularly scheduled Theatre Department productions. This applies to rehearsal time and space, technical equipment, and construction equipment and space. The use of theatre space and equipment must be reserved in advance through the Technical Director of the Theatre. It is the department's intent that these productions employ a minimum of technical requirements.
  5. Open Space performance should be no more than one hour.
