No Scholars' Convocation This Week

Rosenfield Symposium on Northern Ireland

The Rosenfield Program in Public Affairs, International Relations and Human Rights will sponsor a major symposium on Conflict Resolution in Northern Ireland, Tuesday, September 15 through Thursday, September 17, 1998. Speakers representing the major nationalist and unionist parties, and the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition will give their perspectives on the current situation in Northern Ireland, the 1988 Good Friday agreement and the prospects for lasting peace. Professor John McGarry of King's College, University of Western Ontario will give the Scholars' Convocation on Nationalism in Northern Ireland and the Politics of Recognition. A schedule of events for the symposium and list of speakers appears as an addendum to this week's Campus Memo. Everyone is cordially invited to attend. Books on the conflict in Northern Ireland will be placed on reserve in Burling library. More information on Northern Ireland is available at the following web sites: http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/index.html (a comprehensive collection of materials concerning the Troubles); www.sinnfein.ie (Sinn Fein); www.pitt.edu/~novosel/northern.html (Northern Ireland Women's Coalition; www.dup.org.uk (Democratic Unionist Party); www.uup.org (Ulster Unionist Party); and www.sdlp.ie/sdlp/ (SDLP).Students who would like to have a meal with the speakers should contact Prof. Moyer in the Rosenfield Program Office (Ext. 3177; E-mail MOYER).

Films on the Conflict in Northern Ireland

As a lead-in to the September 15-17 symposium on Conflict Resolution in Northern Ireland, the Rosenfield Program will show two documentaries on Thursday, September 10, beginning at 7:00 p.m., in ARH 302. The first of these, Daughters of the Troubles: Belfast Stories, (one hour) offers first-person accounts of the lives of two working-class Belfast women told against the violent history of the last 25 years in Northern Ireland. The stories of Geraldine O'Regan ( a Catholic) and May Blood (a Protestant) are riveting tales of a society torn by sectarian violence and reveal how they have been forced by political and social upheaval to transcend the traditional roles of women in a conservative and segregated society. The wit and humor with which they tell their stories assures us that, whatever the future of this troubled nation, it will be one which its women will help to shape. The second documentary, Sons of Derry, (one hour) portrays the efforts of two men - the Protestant Glen Barr, one time political advisor to the Ulster defense association and the Catholic Paddy Doherty, former spokesman for the Derry Defense Association - to overcome the bitter enmities of the past with constructive solutions to the problems of Northern Ireland's second largest city. After chronicling the history of Derry, the video shows how Barr and Doherty are working in different ways to rebuild the city.

entitled, Ebonics: When Ethnicity Is Rated Over Global History. Cultural Announcements

Cultural Film: Breathless, September 11-13th

Breathless (France, 1960). Directed by Jean-Luc Godard. Language: French with English subtitles. B & W: 90 minutes. ARH 302, 8 p.m., Friday/Saturday, 2 p.m., Sunday.

The Parisian summer has rarely been more beautifully evoked than in these ninety minutes which shook the world. The harbinger of the French New Wave, and one of the true turning points in the history of cinema, Godard's film is a jazz-like improvisation on existential crime thrillers. Featuring the now legendary performance of Jean-Paul Belmondo as a small-time hood living on the edge and Jean Seberg as the American girl who casually sleeps with him and just as casually betrays him, Breathless is funny and daring and just as fresh today as it was on its release (more than thirty years ago). "The modern cinema could not exist without this film" Amos Vogel, Film as a Subversive Art.

Forum Terrace Art Gallery

Recent Prints and Paintings, works by Jeremy Lundquist '99, is currently on display at the Terrace Art Gallery. A reception for this show will be held Monday, September 14 at 7:30 p.m. in the gallery. The show will run through Friday, September 18. The Terrace Art Gallery is open during regular Forum hours. When you're in the Forum, be sure to stop by the gallery and enjoy Jeremy's show.

New Wave Cinema at the French House

This semester the French House will be presenting a retrospective on the New Wave Cinema, 10 p.m. every Thursday, at 1130 East. This Thursday's (September 10th) film is The 400 Blows by Francois Truffaut. Title comes from a French phrase meaning "to raise hell" and the story of a teenage runaway comes from director's own disturbed childhood. Antoine Doinel is a 13-year-old who doesn't fit, his parents are indifferent, and his school almost Dickensian in its bleakness but he has the freedom of the streets of Paris, the safe womb of the cinema, and the companionship of books. As Truffaut put it, the film manages "not to depict adolescence from the usual viewpoint of sentimental nostalgia, but . . . to show it as the painful experience that it is." In the end, the only way to cope with the discovery that injustice exists is "to raise hell". E-mail [milin] with comments.

Performing Arts Film - The Freshman

The Freshman will play Thursday, September 10 at 9:15 p.m. in the Harris Cinema. Harold Lloyd was one of the great comedians of early film, along with Charlie Chaplan and Buster Keaton. You may remember the image of Lloyd hanging from the hands of the clock many stories up above Times Square. In The Freshman, he plays the role of a freshman out to impress everyone, especially women. He "goes out" for every activity including football, for which he has neither the physique nor the talent, but lo and behold, he becomes a star. The film is hilarious and one of the early "greats." Next week's film: Slackers.

Symphonic Concert Band

The Symphonic Band is still trying out players for all parts/sections throughout this week. We welcome anyone with experience playing a band instrument to be part of the group. All brass players, oboes, bassoons, and brass players are especially welcome. The group is now over 40, and they sound great! See for yourself by coming to our rehearsals on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:15 p.m. in room 103 of the new Bucksbaum Center. We can work around any class or athletic conflicts, so don't worry about that. Hope to see you at band!!!
