On Tuesday, November 24, at 11:00 a.m. in Noyce Science Center 1023, Prof. James Rabchuk '84 of the Physics Department at Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois, will be giving a seminar entitled: The Coupling of Turbulence and Sound. The presentation will discuss the progress that engineers, mathematicians and physicists have made in unlocking the secrets of turbulence, making the goal of controlling both the beneficial and harmful aspects of turbulence more likely. Turbulence can be beneficial, as in reducing the drag on moving objects, or it can be harmful such as causing a loss of control in flight. One fascinating aspect of this work is in the area of acoustic forcing and control of turbulence. Acoustic disturbances generated by turbulent flow are suspected to be the cause of feedback loops, which can make either beautiful music in wind instruments or damaging structural vibrations in pipelines and jet engines. Refreshments will be served from 10:45 a.m. Everyone is welcome!

Do you believe the residence halls provide the optimal living arrangements? Come tell us your views.
