Biology Department Seminar

On Wednesday March 11, at 4:30 p.m. in Science 2021, two Biology majors will describe their independent research projects.

•Genevieve Reister '98 will present Neural Crest Cell Migration in Chick Embryos and the Implications for Lens Development, and;

•Charles Cowles '98 will present Cloning and Characterization of DNA Damage-Inducible Elements in Acinetobacter calcoaceticus.

Alum Randall Morgan, Jr. Gives Talks on Health Care

*On Wednesday, March 11 from noon-1 p.m. in the Forum Coffeehouse, Dr. Randy Morgan '65 will present an informal career-hour talk on Careers in Health Care from Noon to 1:00 p.m. on March 11, 1998 in the Forum Coffeehouse.

*On Wednesday, March 11 at 2:15 p.m. in Science 0331, Dr. Randall C. Morgan, Jr. '65, an orthopedic surgeon in Indiana and trustee of Grinnell College, will present a talk entitled, The Implications of Managed Care for the Future of Health Care in the U.S. Everyone with an interest in health care is invited.

Dr. Morgan received a B.A. in chemistry from Grinnell in 1965 and an M.D. from Howard University Medical School. An orthopedic surgeon, he is in private practice at three medical centers in Indiana. He also holds teaching appointments at the Indiana Northwest Center for Medical Education and at the Northwestern University Medical School. A former chief of surgery and of rehabilitation medicine at Methodist Hospital in Gary, Indiana, Dr. Morgan is a member of the Committee on Evaluations of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, among several other professional and civic affiliations. He also served as speaker of the house of delegates of the National Medical Association. Holder of an honorary doctorate from Grinnell, he has been a member of the President's Committee for a Stronger Minority Presence, the Alumni Board, and other college bodies. Dr. Morgan also serves as the president of the National Medical Association.

Latin American History Candidate

Jose Pablo Silva, a candidate in Latin American History, will give a talk Middle-Class Unions and the Rise of the Marxist Left in Chile, 1920-1940 on Wednesday, March 11, 4:15 p.m. in ARH 102. All are welcome and refreshments will be served.

Theatre Department Guest Lecturer

On Tuesday, March 10, Ann Hutchinson Guest will give a lecture in ARH 102 from 4:15-5:30 p.m. Dr. Guest, dance historian and labanotation expert, will present her research towards reconstructing the dance "L'après-midi d'un Faune," how she decoded Vaslav Nijinsky's own dance notation system, and how aesthetic decisions were made despite the various historical interpretations of the work. Dr. Guest will be working with the dance troupe this week and rehearsals are open to the public on the following dates and times:

Rehearsals will take place in either Roberts Theatre or the Dance Studio. Signs will be posted in the Fine Arts building directing visitors to the location.

Visiting Professor

The Art Department is sponsoring a visit by Sara Tabbert '92, MFA, University of Nebraska '97, on March 11 and 12.

On Wednesay, March 11, Ms. Tabbert will conduct a workshop in reductive woodcut for students in the advanced printmaking classes. She will work with the students from 1-8 p.m. in Steiner 100. All are welcome to drop in and see the work in progress after 3 p.m.

On Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m., in Room 201 of the Fine Arts Center, Ms. Tabbert will give a slide lecture about her recent work. Refreshments will be provided and all are invited to attend.

Cultural Announcements

Color of Fear

Diversity Coalition is a student group committed to being a catalyst for dialogue, providing opportunities for people to explore their own and other's attitudes and behaviors. We would like to present Lee Mun Wah's Color of Fear. The documentary consists of a powerful discussion between 8 men of 4 different races, brought together on a retreat. The showings will be followed by discussion among the participants. The workshops are intended for participants to explore issues of race.

To ensure open discussion, we would like to limit the number of participants to 12 for each workshop. Scheduled dates are Saturdays April 4 and April 18 from 1-6 p.m. Due to an increased demand from college administrators/ staff, there will be a separate workshop for administrators and staff on April 4, if there are sufficient participants. Forum Terrace Art Gallery

Grinnell Women in Art, works by Lucy Rollins, Regan Golden-McNerney, Celia Sears, Lucia Danielson, Stephanie Devries, and Kate Wallestad is currently on display at the Terrace Art Gallery. A reception for the show will be held in the gallery tonight, Tuesday, March 10 at 8:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The show will run through Friday, March 13. The Terrace Art Gallery is open during regular Forum hours.

Performing Arts Film: Fastbreak

Gabe Kaplan, who starred as a high school teacher on the popular Seventies sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter, plays a somewhat similar role in this story of a man who dreams of becoming a basketball coach. An opportunity comes his way when an obscure Nevada college gives him a `trial' offer. Under the `contract', he will get fifty dollars for each game he wins and will receive a legitimate contract for the following year if the team whips its rival, Nevada State. Made up of `misfits', including a girl disguised as a guy, the team climbs to national prominence but must then face one of the most powerful teams in the country. —A fun film with built in suspense—Just right for celebrating the end of the basketball season and the upcoming vacation. Thursday March 12—9:15 p.m.—Harris. 110 minutes.

Recital Rescheduled

An organ recital by Keith Sadko, which was scheduled for Sunday, March 8 at 8 p.m., has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 11, at 8 p.m. in Herrick Chapel.

The Art of the Indian Voice

Lalitha Krishnan will perform Carnatic, or South Indian, vocal music in a recital at 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, in the South Lounge, the Forum. Krishnan's concert is one in a series of The Art of the Indian Voice sponsored by the music and religious studies departments. Further support for this program has been provided by the Indian Non-Profit Classical Music Association, Inc., of Maryland.

Krishnan and her two accompanists, Madurai Gnanasundaram (violin) and Ganapathy Raman (mridangam, the classical South Indian drum), are acclaimed young artists in the contemporary Carnatic musical world. Born into a musical family and married into one of South India's most distinguished musical lineages, Krishnan is admired both for her flawless technique and for the emotional depth of her performances. The trio's performance affords the Grinnell College community an opportunity to hear the melodically virtuosic and rhythmically exciting music of distant India.

Tuesday Movie Madness: Jacob's Ladder

This week's film is Adrian Lyne's (Fatal Attraction) Jacob's Ladder a psychological horror film starring Tim Robbins as a vietnam vet trapped in a web of hallucinations, memories, and nightmares as he tries to rebuild his peacetime life. Asian Students in Alliance (ASIA) Office Hours

Stop by the ASIA Office to check out the resources in its extensive library, to study in a quiet place, to hang out watching a video while lounging on the futon, or to just say hi! Associate Dean Appointment for One Year

Jim Swartz is pleased to announce that Paula Smith has agreed to serve in the one year position as Associate Dean. Paula has been an effective faculty member, chair of the English Department, and at large member of the Executive Council. Prof. Swartz is looking forward to working with Paula and Helen Scott to help lead and facilitate the functions of the Academic Program.

Carleton VS. Grinnell Debate Results

In last Thursday's parliamentary debate on the motion: This House Believes That Liberal Arts Colleges Are Elitist Scams, 46 out of 65 Members of the House cast the following vote: Ayes: 8, Noes: 38. The motion proposed by Carleton College was defeated. In a separate vote for the best side based on technical merit of presentation, the vote was: Proposition: 10, Opposition: 37. The vote went to the Opposition (Grinnell College.)

Internship

The United Church Press People of Color Internship Program is now accepting applications for Summer 1998. This program is designed for students who are interested in a career in book publishing and requires a minimum of 20 work hours per week and has a stipend of $2500. The dates of the internship are June 15, 1998 to August 5, 1998. Application deadline: April 14, 1998. Last Legislative Coffee

Senator Dennis Black and Representative Danny Carroll will report on the progress of the Iowa legislative session, and answer questions from the audience Saturday, March 14 from 9-10 a.m. at St. Mary's Religious Education Center, 1013 Broad Street. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Chamber of Commerce, it is free and open to the public. Coffee and rolls will be served.

A video of the coffee will be broadcast on cable channel 19, Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17, at noon and 6:00 p.m.

Faculty/Staff Announcements

CPR Training and Re-certification

The Office of Human Resources has made arrangements with Grinnell Regional Medical Center to provide American Heart Association CPR certification and re-certification courses during Spring Break.

Four sessions are being offered and each will include training in adult and child/infant CPR. The training will include a discussion of some handouts, a video, and demonstrations by the instructors, followed by hands on, individualized training with the "Annie".

Support & Dining Services Staff

The Staff Relations Committee is seeking four Support and Dining Services staff members to serve on the committee during the next term. The SRC was established to expand support staff communication with the administration.

The committee meets monthly with Frank Thomas, Vice President for Human Resources, for 1 1/2 hours. These meetings address topics concerning working conditions, benefits and other related issues.

An employee must have been employed by the college for a minimum of one year to be eligible for service on the committee. Elections will be held during the upcoming meeting, Wednesday, March 18 at 2 p.m. in ARH 302.

Career Development Office Announcements

CDO Appointments Over Break Beginning Thursday, March 19, the Career Development Office will have at least one career counselor available on a daily basis. A Support group for faculty, students, staff and community members with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder will begin after spring break on April 1st. UCC Child Care Needed: The Grinnell United Church of Christ, Congregational, is looking for college students to assist with Nursery/Toddler childcare during worship each Sunday, beginning this fall. This is a paid position involving a commitment of 2-3 Sunday mornings a month throughout the school year (Sept. - May). References will be requested. their own and other's attitudes and behaviors. Founded in the Spring of 1995 to promote dialogue on campus and within the surrounding community, we have since been involved in conducting workshops and seminars related to issues of diversity and multiculturalism, under the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

We are committed to fostering dialogue about the differences of race, ethnicity, gender, class, culture, religion and sexual orientation. Workshops conducted in the residence halls, academic and administrative department are designed to promote awareness on campus by helping participants confront stereotypes through interactive exercises.

This past year, DivCo has been involved in creating dialogue by conducting workshops in the residence halls, through Social Action Theater during New Student Orientation and for the ACM- Committee on Minority Concerns hosted by Grinnell College in November 1997.

Student Employment

Applications for Harris Center Employment

Applications for employment at the Harris Center will be available Monday, March 30, immediately following Spring Break. At that time you can pick up an application at Student Affairs in the Forum.

Student Assistant Positions Available

The Career Development Office is accepting applications for several student positions for the 1998-99 school year. These positions require typing, filing, telephone skills; the ability to interact with students, faculty and public; word processing and computer experience; must have high degree of confidentiality. Interested students should pick up an application at the Career Development Office; applications will be due in the CDO by Friday, March 13, 1998.

Summer Archaeological Field School

Final deadline for applications to the summer field school in Flagstaff is Wednesday March 11. See John Whittaker or Kathy Kamp in Goodnow.

Student Affairs Office Announcement

Security Residence hall doors will be locked early-6:00 p.m., Friday, March 13. This is a time when thefts increase because there are few people around. Please carry your keys and lock your room doors.

Vacation Residence halls will close at 12:00 noon, Saturday, March 14. You must be out of the hall by that time. No exceptions will be made. Halls open at 5:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 25. No one will be allowed in before then. Make travel plans accordingly.

Residence Hall Maintenance/Security For security and maintenance reasons, college staff may be required to enter student rooms during the spring break period.

Student Belongings in Hallways Any student belongings in hallways during break will be considered abandoned and discarded. Please clear your hallway of any student possessions or items that belong in student rooms.

Apartment Sublet The Office of Student Affairs is collecting information from students who have apartments in town and wish to sublet them for this summer. Anyone wishing to sublet an apartment from another student this summer should stop by the Office of Student Affairs for information on available apartments.

Need a Roommate? The Office of Student Affairs is compiling a list of those students who are seeking a roommate for this year's room draw. If you are in need of a roommate, please stop by the Office of Student Affairs to place your name on the "Roommate Needed" list. The list will then be made available to students who are seeking a roommate.

Survivor Group

A confidential support group for sexual assault and abuse has been formed for survivors. To find out more about this group please contact Lisa Matye [matye]. Non-mandated reporting and all information is kept confidential.

Teach an Exco Class

Interested in teaching an exco class next fall? Exco will hold an informational meeting for potential teachers Tuesday (yes, today!) at noon in the Forum Coffeehouse. Applications are available in the CSC (Mears Cottage), or by e-mailing [exco]. They are due on April 17.

Academic Awards/Scholarships/Internships/Grants

1999 Hewlett Summer Internship Project

Funded by a grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to establish Overseas Community Involvement Programs, an internship project entitled "Community-Based Conservation Policies: Evaluating the Benefits for Communities and Resources in Arid Western Namibia" will be offered during the summer of 1999. See addendum to Campus Memo for more detailed information. Deadline for application is Friday, April 10, 1998.

Lori Schwab Prize for Community Service

The Lori Schwab Prize for Community Service memorializes a woman who focused her abundant enthusiasm and energy on helping others. It was created to encourage and affirm such selflessness in Grinnellians. The prize will be awarded purely on merit to a senior who has demonstrated a commitment to helping others, especially women and children. There are no restrictions on the use of the award. Pick up applications at the Office of Student Affairs. Applications are due back in the Office of Student Affairs on Monday, March 30. The prize will be awarded by the family and be announced in campus publications and the city paper.

Writing Contests

Zywicki Scholarship

The Tammy Zywicki Memorial Scholarship was started with contributions from strangers who wanted to do something to preserve her memory. Applications may be picked up at the Student Affairs Office and are due back at the Student Affairs Office on Monday, March 30, at 5:00 p.m.
