Art History Talks

·Thursday;, Feb. 27, 4:15 p.m., in Fine Arts 201, Jenny Anger, a candidate for the twentieth century position in art history, will give a talk. Ms. Anger is a David E. Finley Fellow (1994-1997) currently in residence at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, National Gallery of Art, Washington D. C., where she is completing her dissertation on Modernism and the Gendering of Paul Klee for her Ph.D., Brown University. All members of the campus community are welcome.

·Tuesday, March 4, at 4:15 p.m. in Fine Arts 201, there will be an art history talk by Blake Stimson, visiting assistant professor, Department of Art History, University of Oregon and a candidate for the twentieth century position in art history. Professor Stimson is completing his Ph.D. degree at Cornell University, writing a dissertation on American Pop artists, Minimalists and Conceptualists (Trapped in the Gap Between Art and Life: A Theory of the Neo-Avantgarde).

Astronomy Lecture

Travis Rector, a 4th year graduate student at University of Colorado, Boulder, will give a lecture on astronomy next Monday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in the General Physics classroom. The talk is for general audiences.

Biology Department Seminar

On Tuesday March 4, Dr. Floyd Sanford from Coe College will present a seminar entitled Use of Sponge Shelters by Hermit Crabs in Sci. 2021 at 4:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served in Sci. 1021 at 4:15 p.m.

Chemistry Seminar

On Wednesday, February 26, 7:30 p.m., Sci. 2022, Leslie J. Lyons will lecture on Microelectrodes: Exploring New Frontiers in Electrochemistry. Lee R. Sharpe, will lecture on Silicon Finally Sees the Light . Professors Lyons and Sharpe will discuss their sabbatical research performed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during 1995-1996. Refreshments will be served (maybe even grits).

Dr. Faustus Lecture by Eric Rasmussen '82

The Theatre Department will present a lecture by Visiting Scholar, Dr. Eric Rasmussen '82 during the weekend of the upcoming production of Christo pher Marlowe's Dr. Faustus. Dr. Rasmussen will speak at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8th in Roberts Theatre, on Dr. Faustus ' famous book-lined study.

A 1982 Grinnell graduate, Dr. Rasmussen earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and currently teaches and conducts research at the University of Nevada at Reno. A leading authority on Marlowe and his age, Dr. Rasmussen is the author of A Textual Companion to Doctor Faustus (St. Martin's, 1994) and joint texts (1604, 1616) in the Revels Plays Series (1993) and of Christopher Marlowe: Dr. Faustus and Other Plays (Oxford,. 1995). He is also co-editing the New Variorum Hamlet for the MLA and editing the new Arden edition of King Henry VI Part III.

Please join us in welcoming back to campus a distinguished alumnus on the festive occasion of the weekend's production of Dr. Faustus, the great Elizabethan tragedy of an o'er-reaching aspiring mind in the great age of the Scientific Revolution and New World discovery.

Joseph Weinberg Workshops

The Sexual Assault Working Group and Proactives will present Joseph Weinberg to Grinnell College on Thursday and Friday. Mr. Weinberg is an accomplished speaker on the topics of men and masculinity, sexuality, communication, and sexual assault/rape. He will give three presentations:

Rosenfield Program Talk on The Peace Process and Human Rights in Bosnia

Kristina Koch '92 will give a talk on, One Year After the Dayton Agree ment: Progress in putting Bosnia Back Together, on Monday, March 3, 1997, at 4:15 p.m. in South Lounge. Koch is OSCE Representative to the Human Rights Coordination Center, U.N. Headquarters in Sarajevo. Everyone is cordially invited to attend.

The American West: Landscape and History

On Friday, February 28, at 4:15 p.m. in ARH 305, the Department of History will present the work of two senior honors candidates who will report on independent research that they conducted last semester at the Newberry Library in Chicago.

Amy Scott will discuss the role of the Great Northern Railroad in the formation of Glacier National Park.

Owen Stanwood will examine the relationships between the Dakota Indians and the expanding United States in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries.

Part of the ongoing Department of History Colloquium, everyone is invited to attend to attend and refreshments will be served.

Turn-of-the-century Prague

T. Mills Kelly, Lecturer in History at the University of New Hampshire, will speak on Political Radicalism in Late-Imperial Prague, 1900-1914 at 4:15 p.m. on Monday, March 3, in ARH 102. Refreshments will be served.

Will The Death Penalty be Reinstated in Iowa?

In 1995, the death penalty was narrowly defeated in the Iowa Legisla ture. With a Republican majority now in both houses, Governor Branstad hopes it will pass in 1997. How do you feel about the death penalty? Grinnellians are divided on the issue. Whichever side you take, the Grinnell Quaker Meeting and Amnesty International invite you to hear David Victor and Barbara Doty, speakers from Iowans Against the Death Penalty, who are giving a presentation in South Lounge this Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. They welcome hard questions, so come and join the dialogue on this difficult issue. Refreshments and informal discussion to follow.

Cultural Film: Blood of the Condor, Feb. 28 - March 2

Blood of the Condor will be presented in ARH 302 at 8 p.m. on Feb. 28 and March 1 and at 2 p.m. on March 2.

"Days of Percussion" on Campus Thursday and Friday

The Iowa Percussive Arts Society's annual "Days of Percussion" will be held on Thursday and Friday, February 27 and 28. Organized by Mark Dorr, events are scheduled for the Harris Center Theatre and Concert Hall, Herrick Chapel, and the Fine Arts Building. The Grinnell College Percussion Ensemble and Drum Circle, directed by Mark Dorr, will perform. Of particular note are the following concerts:

·Thursday, 8 p.m., Herrick Chapel, Leigh Howard Stevens, marimba; ·Friday, 8 p.m., Harris Center Concert Hall, Britain-Moore Duo jazz steel pan, marimba, and electronic percus sion; and

Faculty Recital by Jeanmarie Chenette on Sunday

The Department of Music will present a Faculty Recital by Jeanmarie Chenette on Sunday, March 2, at 7 p.m. in Herrick Chapel. Performing on wire-strung harp, she will present a Celtic Collage, a selection of traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, and Wales. Chenette teaches both Celtic and concert harp at Grinnell College and is on the roster of Iowa Artists in the Schools and Communities. In this latter capacity, she performs in concerts and residency programs throughout the state.

Performing Arts Film: Presumed Innocent

Based on the best selling novel by Lawyer Scott Turow, the film stars Harrison Ford as a successful prosecuting attorney charged with murder. In order to defend himself he must find the real killer or risk being convicted. Thursday February 27 - 9:15 p.m. - North Lounge.

·Note: Because of a conflict in Harris Center, Presumed Innocent will be shown in North Lounge of the Forum in its usual slot Thursday evening at 9:15 p.m.

Roger and Me by Micheal Moore will be presented in North Lounge at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 26. General Motors moves out; Flint, Michigan destroyed. Learn about the Human side of downsizing.

SGA Films

·Microcosmos: This documentary about insect life is incredible footage which includes close-ups, slow motion, and time-lapse photography. It has everything a human Hollywood movie would have (sex, violence, etc.) but it takes place in the backyard. Friday 2/28, 6 p.m., Harris and Saturday, 3/1, 2 p.m., Harris Center.

·Twister: TV Weather guy Bill Harding (Bill Paxton) wants to divorce his tornado chasing wife (Helen Hunt) in order to marry his girlfriend Melissa (Jami Gertz). But when tornadoes sweep across Oklahoma (although some of the movie was shot right here in Iowa!) the threesome gets wound up in chasing the tornadoes, trying to use a new measuring device that requires them to get into the eye of the storm. ·West Side Story: This classic musical is a modern day Romeo and Juliet. The setting is New York City where two gangs (the Jets and the Sharks) fight for their territory. When Tony (the former leader of the Jets) falls in love with Maria (the sister of the leader of the Sharks) there is major trouble and much singing. Starring Natalie Wood and Richard Beyner. Saturday 3/1, 8:30 p.m., North Lounge and Sunday, 3/2, 6:30 p.m., Harris Center.

Slavic Coffeehouse

Come sample the secrets of Slavic cuisine and culture this Saturday night at the Russian Department's annual Slavic Coffeehouse. A variety of goodies both sweet and savory, prepared by the students and faculty of the Russian Department, will be available for the enjoyment of the entire campus. Live entertainment, slide presentations, and an exhibit of Slavic cultural artifacts are also planned for the event, which will be held Saturday, March 1, 6:30-10:00 p.m. in the Forum Coffeehouse. Everyone is welcome to attend the entire event, or to stop by on the way to other Saturday night activities.

Tuesday Movie Madness

Doggtown Productions is pleased to present the final February love story, Vincent Ward's Map Of the Human Heart. Starring Jason Scott Lee and Anne Parillaud, this tale tells of two lovers who meet as children, are separated for years, and reunited as adults during World War II. The film will be shown Tuesday, February 25 at 11:00 p.m. in Gardner. Finger [HUANG] for more details.

Aikido Demonstration

The Grinnell Aikikai will be hosting an aikido demonstration this Thurs day, February 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the North Lounge. Guest instructors from Iowa City will be present to demonstrate advanced techniques and answer questions about the art of aikido.

International Diversity Week Celebration

International diversity week celebration committee is publishing a Journal as a part of International Diversity Week Celebration, 1997. We will be publishing any articles that have to do with international experience. Interna tional students, students who have been on off-campus programs and faculty and staff are encouraged to make their contribution. Your article can share any kind of cultural experience, cultural events, recipes, or anything that gives a flavor of diversity. Men's Basketball Makes Tournament

The Grinnell College men's basketball team will play in the four-team Midwest Conference tournament this Friday at Lawrence University. Your Pioneers tipoff against the host Vikings at 8:00 p.m. In the other semi -final game Knox plays Ripon at 6:00 p.m. The championship game will be held on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Good luck Grinnell!

Town and Gown

The Town and Gown Drive raises funds locally for Grinnell College from the community, faculty, and staff. Proceeds fund the J. B. Grinnell Scholarships and the Annual Fund. The J. B. Grinnell Scholarships are awarded to local students to attend Grinnell. Recipients of the J. B. Grinnell Scholarship currently on campus are Jake Boyer '98, Mark Burkhead '98, Jennifer Loucks '00, Mark Paulson '00, Reyne Stone See '97, Kristin Stuchis '98, Aaron Wagner '99, and Richard Wemer '99.

The Annual Fund supports the day-to-day academic and programmatic needs of the college. All areas, from athletic to the library and student affairs to faculty development, benefit. Annually, almost 200 volunteers help with the Town and Gown Drive. to let Iowa legislators know that you are opposed to recent bills proposed in the Iowa House and Iowa Senate which would ban the recognition of same-sex marriages. These measures are similar to last year's, but with Republican control of both houses this year, our voices are more vital than ever. CPR Certification and Re-Certification

The Office of Human Resources has made arrangements with Grinnell Regional Medical Center to provide American Heart Association CPR certification and re-certification courses during Spring Break.

Four sessions are being offered and each will include training in adult and child/infant CPR. Participants will receive reading material approxi mately one week prior to the course. The training will include a discussion of the reading materials, a video, and demonstrations by the instructors, followed by hands on, individualized training with the "Annie's". The times and dates are:

Applications for Student Membership on the Rosenfield Program Committee Now Open

There will be three or four vacancies for student membership on the Rosenfield Program committee for 1997-98. All current first-year, second- year and third-year students who have an interest in public affairs, international relations and human rights and who plan to return to Grinnell College next year are urged to apply. This committee, consisting of faculty and students, plans three or four major symposia each year, sponsors other speakers, funds the Rosenfield summer internships and funds faculty and student projects. Membership requires a substantial time commitment in planning programs and in hosting visitors.

Students planning to apply should submit a statement to the Rosenfield Program Office in Harry Hopkins House by Monday, March 3 at 5 p.m. which discusses your interests in public affairs, international relations and human rights, your comments on Rosenfield Program events that you have attended, and your ideas for events you would like to have the program sponsor in the future. You should state your major (if declared), your current year at the College, and your activities which relate to the purposes of the Rosenfield Program.

Career Development Office Announcements

·Upcoming Workshops

Application workshops will be held for students interested in applying for summer internship grants. The final workshop date is Friday, February 28 at 4:15 p.m. in ARH 102.

For students planning a fall internship, the final application workshop will be held on Wednesday, February 26 at 12 Noon in the Career Develop ment Office. This application process also involves students interested in doing an internship for Spring 1998, who will be off campus during the fall 1997 semester.

Note: Attendance at one workshop per internship is required.

Sexual Orientation & Career Decision-Making will be the topic of a workshop scheduled to be held on Tuesday, February 25 (tonight) at 8:00 p.m. in the Stonewall Resource Center. The decision to come out in the application and interview process, or to come out on the job, should be strictly personal. This workshop is designed to assist you with decisions regarding sexual/affectional orienta tion and job searching.

·The Irish Writing Program

This program offers applicants the opportunity to study creative writing and Irish literature in Ireland for the summer. This will be a linkage program between the University of Iowa and the TCD/USIT Irish Studies Summer School at Trinity College, Dublin. The Irish Writing Program will be administered under the auspices of the Division of Continuing Education at the University of Iowa and will be limited to twenty students.

The program will run for five weeks from June 25-August 6, 1997. The program will be accredited and offered for five semester hours. Applicants must be 18 years of age by June 30, 1997. Applicants will be selected based on a writing sample and a statement of purpose.

Students interested in this program should plan to attend an information session on March 3 from Noon - 1:00 p.m. in Burling Library Conference Room or stop by the Campus Post Office from 10:30 a.m. - Noon to speak to a representative.

·Volunteers Needed for Child Bereavement Project

The Angels Among Us Project is in need of volunteers to help with creating letters for children ages 4 - 12. This project was created to provide grieving children with personalized letters and activities in the mail. In each letter the child receives colorful animated graphic pictures, a bereave ment method of coping with their loss, and self-esteem activities. Need-Based Financial Aid Applicants

The March 1, 1997, deadline to mail documents to the Office of Financial Aid is fast approaching. If you have Grinnell Grant, Stafford Student Loans, etc. as part of your financial aid award, you must reapply each year. If you are not sure whether this applies to you, call Financial Aid X -3250.

Returning Students: Non-refundable Cash Deposit Due

In accordance with our usual practice, we are asking each student, planning to return to Grinnell College next fall, to make a non-refundable cash deposit of $100.00 on or before April 1, 1997. The purpose of the deposit is to establish with accuracy the number of spaces which should be reserved for next fall's returning students, after which the number of new students to admit can be determined.

Only those students who have made the advance deposit by April 1, 1997, and paid all outstanding student account balances, will be eligible to participate in pre-registration for fall classes and room drawings. Pre -registration and room draw take place in April.

When the student enrolls at Grinnell in the fall, the advance deposit of $100.00 is credited to the student's tuition and fee account. Students who have been granted an academic or personal leave are required to pay the deposit, which will be applied to their tuition and fee account at the begin ning of their return semester. If for any reason a student fails to enroll after having made the advance deposit, the $100.00 is forfeited. SGA Shuttle to Iowa City

SGA will offer a shuttle service to Iowa City this Saturday, March 1. The shuttle departs promptly from the Forum at 10:15 a.m. and arrives at the University of Iowa Student Union at 11:30 a.m. The shuttle departs from the Student Union at 4 p.m. and arrives back at the Forum by 5:15 p.m. Students interested in taking the shuttle should sign up at the Forum Desk by noon on Friday. The cost is $6, which is due at the time of signup. E-mail [Social] with questions.

SPARC

The Student Publications and Radio Committee (SPARC) is looking for a business manager for the 1997-1998 school year. The business manager is paid $250 per semester. All interested applicants should e-mail [MORGAN] or [SPARC] for more information.

·Summer Jobs

The Office of Special Services and Summer Activities is now accepting application for 1997 summer jobs.

Positions are available for one life guard, two summer assistants and up to six program assistants. Detailed information about the positions and the application procedures can be obtained at the office in Harry Hopkins House, 1131 Park St. from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m.

·Summer Jobs in Physics and Astronomy

There will be a number of opportunities for students to work with Grinnell faculty on research projects in physics and astronomy this summer. At this week's physics seminar (11 a.m. on Tuesday, 2/25 in Science 1023) faculty members will describe these projects and answer questions about application procedures. A video tape of the seminar will be available for loan from Ed Dudak, the physics technician.

Application forms can be obtained from, and should be returned to, the Science Division Office. The application deadline is this Friday, Feb. 28.

·Tuesday (tonight) 2/25: Bob's Famous Coffee Drinking Contest!! 10:15 p.m. All-you-can-drink in an hour and a half for $1. Winner becomes famous.
