This week's Scholars' Convocation, Ingenious Mathematical Amateurs, will be delivered by mathematician Doris Schattschneider who will speak about two mathematical amateurs, Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher and a San Diego homemaker, Marjorie Rice. Professor Schattschneider is professor of mathematics at Moravian College, Bethlehem, PA. She received her master's and Ph.D from Yale University.

Professor Schattschneider has authored many scholarly articles on plane tiling and is the co-author of a book and collection of geometyr models, M.C. Escher Kaleidocycles. Her book, Visiions of Symmetry: Notebooks, Periodic Drawings and related Work of M.C. Escher, was the result of a two-year research project that was supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Her article: "Escher's Metaphors," appeared in the November 1994 issue of Scientific American.

Schattschneider has been active in the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), serving as section president and governor. She is the recipient of a certificate of Meritorious Service from the section.

• On Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m., in Science 2022, Prof. Schattschneider will give a presentation on Escher's Combinatorial Patterns. The talk will feature slides of many of Escher's pictures. Cultural Film Series: Hyenas

Hyenas, Senegal, 1992. In Wolof with English subtitles. Color/113 min. Directed by Djibril Diop Mambety. With Arni Diakhate and Mansour Diouf. ARH 302 Friday/Saturday, 8 p.m., Sunday, 2 p.m. (Internet Movie Database)

In this provocative film, Mambety adapts a timeless parable about human greed into a biting satire of today's Africa. Brilliantly combining two seemingly unrelated stories linked to the African village of Colombane, the director makes Colombane a symbol for Africa's thirty years after independence. The first story unfolds as a tale of a proud and mysterious prostitute, Linguere Ramatou (Arni Diakhate), who, as a young pregnant woman, was driven away from her native village to the capital Dakar. The second story tells of the return of a wealthy old woman to the decaying backwater of Colombane, with promises of modern capitalism and the "reign of the hyenas." The strong story line is combined with superb photography, original music and first rate acting.

"This wicked tale, told with wit and irony, has all the ingredients of a crowd-pleaser." The Village Voice.

Next week's movie: East Side Story, Russia 1997.

EXCO Class Film:

It is Generation X week in the American Independent Film exco class. First, we will watch Slacker, 1991, Richard Linklater's (Dazed and Confused, Suburbia) debut film about twenty-somethings in Austin, Texas. Linklater avoids all the normal conventions, such as plot, main characters, in order to deliver a truly experimental work. Second, we will watch the movie that requires no description — Kevin Smith's Clerks, the first and best of the New Jersey trilogy. Monday, March 2 in ARH 302, 8 p.m. - Slacker, 9:30 - Clerks.

Performing Arts and Concerned Black Students Film: To Sir, With Love.

In To Sir, With Love, Sidney Poiter plays a young, unemployed West Indian engineer who takes a job at an East End London high school. The unruly, uncooperative students he encounters there sense that he is unprepared to cope with antics, and so, they take every opportunity to frustrate his efforts to maintain discipline.

Aside from being highly entertaining, the film provides insight into the teaching profession and how students outside of the mainstream perceive the education system. The New York Times said, "Controversial and explosive in content." Thursday, February 26th, 9:15 p.m., Harris Cinema. (Internet Movie Databse)

Next week's film: Air Force One.
