
This week's Scholars' Convocation, Mammy, Sapphire and Jezebel: Historical Images of Black Women and their Implica tions for Psychological Functioning, will be delivered at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, in Harris Cinema, by Carolyn M. West. Ms. West is a clinical psychologist at the Family Research Center at the University of New Hampshire. West received her bachelor's degree in psychology, cum laude, and master's and Ph.D. degrees in clinical psychology from the University of Missouri, St. Louis. The lecture is sponsored by the Louise R. Noun Program in Women's Studies.
She will make connections between the Mammy image and eating disorders, and concerns about physical features such as skin color. She also will draw connections between the Sapphire image and the expression of anger, and between the Jezebel image and sexual victimization.
She has written many articles including Mammy, Sapphire and Jezebel: Historical Images of Black Women and their Implications for Psychotherapy, which was published in the journal Psychotherapy; Partner Violence in Ethnic Minorities Families, published in U.S. Air Force Domestic Literature Review, Synthesis and Implications for Practice, edited by L.M. Williams and J.L. Jasinski.
Post-Apartheid Politics in South Africa
Joseph Nxusani, senior lecturer at the Univ. of Fort Hare, South Africa, and Adrien Wing, Assoc. Prof. of law at the Univ. of Iowa, will speak on Post-Apartheid Politics in South Africa: The Current Situation , today, Tuesday Feb. 18, at 8:00 p.m. in South Lounge. This lecture is part of the Black History Month Mini-symposium and is sponsored by the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs and the Rosenfield Program in Public Affairs, International Relations and Human Rights.
Prof. Nxusani teaches labor law and has taught forensic medicine, criminal law and administrative law. His areas of expertise include social renewal, Africanism and Africanization. He is a visiting professor at the Univ. of Iowa this semester.
Prof. Wing helped write the constitution of South Africa after apartheid.
She has written and lectured extensively on South Africa, and American
and South African relations.

Chemistry Seminar

Panel Discussion, Advertising's Erosion of our Dignity
A panel discussion with Carolyn West, will take place Thursday, Feb. 20, 7:30 p.m., South Lounge. Dr. West and the panel, including Lisa Avalos-Bock, Siclinda Canty-Elliott, Gretchen Revie, and Sylvia Thorsen-Smith will react to Ms. West's Convocation talk and to the film, Still Killing Us Softly (see listing under Cultural Announce ments.) The panel will address media sterotypes of Black women and their effects on psychological function as well as the impact of media on other problems in our society such as the channeling of men and women into traditional roles and occupations, economic discrimination against women, sexual abuse and harassment, rape and other forms of violence, pornography, teenage pregnancy and eating disorders. argues that the global decentering of whiteness is central to the struggle for

Connoisseur Musica String Ensemble to Play on Saturday
The Department of Music will present a concert by the Connoisseur Musica String Ensemble on Saturday, February 22, at 4 p.m. in Herrick Chapel. The program will include the premier of String Quartet No. 2 by assistant professor of music Ralph Russell. Members of the Connoisseur Musica String Ensemble are Terrance Gray, violin; Phyllis McKenny, violin; Reneé Baker, viola; and Edward Moore, cello. The ensemble, formed in 1991, has traveled internationally, performing in Vienna, on the Canary Islands as well as at the Kennedy Center, As members of the Chicago Sinfonietta, the ensemble is touted for its "excellent and homogenous body of sound," and "intriguing elegance and joy of music making."

Noun Program Film: Still Killing Us Softy
Using examples of ads from magazines, newspapers, album covers and billboards, this documentary is based on the lectures of Dr. Jean Kilbourne. This is a concise and important analysis of a multi-billion dollar industry that preys on the fears and insecurities of women and men of all races, ages and economic levels. Dr. Kilbourne explores the relationship of media images to actual problems in society, such as the channeling of men and women into traditional roles and occupations, economic discrimination against women, sexual abuse of children, rape and other forms of violence, pornography, sexual harassment, teenage pregnancy and eating disorders.

Performing Arts Film A Cry in The Dark
A Cry in The Dark, starring Meryl Streep and Sam Neill, is based on a true-life event in which a mother claimed her child was carried away by dingoes in the Australian outback. The authorities and the press did not accept her story, and she was put on trial for killing the child. The outcome reveals this to be another in a long line of famous cases in which a conclusive verdict of guilty or innocent was difficult to determine. He kidnaps kids in order to steal their dreams, but finds that he only gets nightmares because the kids are so afraid of him. Grinnell Community Art Gallery Exhibit
Iowa Writers by Iowa Writers, an exhibition by Iowa Scribes of the Iowa Scribes Calligraphy Guild containing 33 works from Iowa artists will be on display in the Grinnell Community Art Gallery from February 21 through March 14, 1997. Newberry Library Program
Two fellowships are open to ACM/GLCA faculty in any department who are interested in team-teaching an interdisciplinary seminar in the humanities in the fall of 1998 and doing research at the Newberry Library in Chicago. Previous directors and six-month fellows are welcome to reapply.
·The eleven-month fellow teaches the fall seminar, serves as program director for the entire year, and helps with recruiting for the following year.
·The six-month fellow teaches the fall seminar with the director, helps supervise independent research projects, and has some time for his or her own research.
Applications from pairs of faculty are especially welcome, but proposals from applicants who do not yet have a partner will also be considered. In contrast to prior years, faculty from the same institution will now be encouraged to apply together, espe cially if they are in different disciplines and have had experience team -teaching. To discuss possible seminar proposals, call Thomas Hellie at ACM as soon as possible. The deadline for applications is March 1, 1997.

Applications for Student Membership on the Rosenfield Program Committee are Now Open
There will be three or four vacancies for student membership on the Rosenfield Program committee for 1997-98. All current first year, second year and third year students who have an interest in public affairs, interna tional relations and human rights and who plan to return to Grinnell College next year are urged to apply. This committee, consisting of faculty and students, plans three or four major symposia each year, sponsors other speakers, funds the Rosenfield summer internships and funds faculty and student projects. Membership requires a substantial time commit ment in planning programs and in hosting visitors.
Students planning to apply should submit a statement to the Rosenfield Program Office in Harry Hopkins House by Monday, March 3, at 5:00 p.m., which discusses your interests in public affairs, international relations and human rights, your comments on Rosenfield Program events that you have attended, and your ideas for events you would like to have the program sponsor in the future. You should state your major (if declared), your current year at the College, and your activities which relate to the purposes of the Rosenfield Program.

Application workshops will be held for students interested in applying for summer internship grants. The next two workshop dates are Thursday, February 20 at 12 Noon in ARH 102 and Friday, February 28 at 4:15 p.m. (also in ARH 102).
For students planning a fall internship, application workshops will be held on Friday, February 21 at 4:15 p.m. and Wednesday, February 26 at 12 Noon in the Career Development Office. This application process also involves students interested in doing an internship for Spring 1998, who will be off campus during the fall 1997 semester.

Sexual Orientation & Career Decision-Making will be the topic of a workshop scheduled on Tuesday, February 25 at 8:00 p.m. in the Stonewall Resource Center. The decision to come out in the application and interview process, or to come out on the job, should be strictly personal. This workshop is designed to assist you with decisions regarding sexual/affectional orientation and job searching.

The University of Iowa Substance Abuse Counseling Program (SAC) offers graduate courses leading to a Master of Arts degree in substance abuse counseling. Students are trained on both a theoretical and practical level. Noun Committee Seeking New Members
The Noun Program bears the name of political activist, Iowa historian, and curator, Louise Rosenfield Noun of Des Moines, Iowa. Noun is the author of Strong-Minded Women and More Strong-Minded Women. She gradu ated from Grinnell in 1929 and received an honorary degree from the college in 1973.
The goal of the Noun Committee is to explore implications of the new feminist scholarship, to increase an understanding of international feminisms, and to explore ways in which the study of women is being transformed by new perspectives on race, class and gender.
The Noun Committee is composed of the Noun Chair and 12 faculty and students representing the three divisions of the college and a number of student organizations, including, among others, the Multi-ethnic Coalition, Environmental Studies, Environmental Interest Group, Politically Active Feminist Alliance, Student Organization for Latina /Latinos, Asian Students in Alliance, and the Student Government Associa tion.
The committee meets about four times per year to discuss programming proposals and to determine priorities for funding. Students interested in participating on Noun Committee 97/98 may apply by writing a brief letter of application. Include name, year, major, and a brief explanation of why you are interested in participating on Noun Committee. Application deadline is April 17. Participants Needed for Psychology Experiment

RLC Selection Committee
Students interested in serving on the 1996-97 Residence Life Coordinator Selection Committee may now pick up an application at student affairs from Carol Ahrens. All applications must be returned no later than noon, Friday, February 27. The responsibilities of the Residence Life Coordinator Selection Committee will be to interview the candidates and eat lunch with them. The deadline for submitting your diploma order and commencement information form to the Office of the Registrar was Friday, February 14. If you missed this deadline, please locate your form and submit it to the registrar immediately. This form is required even if you do not have any changes to report to our office. Any student requesting a name change after the diploma order has been placed will be charged a $15.00 replacement fee. Other changes can be processed if submitted immediately.

CERA Summer Internship
Due to a generous gift to the Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA), the Biology Department is pleased to offer a yearly CERA summer research internship. The proposed research should be relevant to the goals of CERA, which include study and restoration of grassland, forest and aquatic ecosystems, and the use of such environments in teaching.
Students interested in this opportunity need to:
(1) find a Grinnell faculty member who agrees to supervise the research;
(2) prepare a 2-3 page proposal that describes the research;
(3) request letters of recommendation from 2 Grinnell faculty members.
Applications should be returned to the CERA director, Jackie Brown (X-11), by March 3. The award will be announced by March 14.
