This week's Scholars' Convocation, The Empire and Its Double: A Study of the Influence of Imperialism in Major Fiction from Jane Austin to Salman Rushdie, will be delivered at 11 a.m., Thursday, April 18, in Herrick Chapel by author Sara Suleri Goodyear.
Suleri Goodyear is professor of English at Yale University. She received her bachelor's degree from Kinnaird College, her master's from Panjab University and her Ph.D. from Indiana University. She is the author of Meatless Days. In this autobiographical story, her most famous work, Suleri Goodyear weaves her memories of life in postcolonial Pakistan with the violent history of the country's independence. She recounts her experiences in Pakistan, and her life as an immigrant in England and the United States.
Suleri Goodyear's next works include a novel of adultery and censorship in Pakistan, and a "close reading of Salman Rushdie and the question of national identity in the third world."
Suleri Goodyear also will speak about Women's Autobiographies , at 4:15 p.m. Thursday in the South Lounge of the Forum. Both lectures are sponsored by the Noun Program in Women's Studies.

Janet Langford Kelly '79, senior vice president, secretary and general counsel of the Sara Lee Corporation, will speak at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 18, in the South Lounge of the Forum. Kelly, who majored in history at Grinnell, will speak about Reflections of a Grinnell Graduate.
After earning her law degree from Yale University, Kelly began her career in 1983 as law clerk to the Honorable James J. Hunter III of the Third U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In 1984, she joined Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in New York as an associate. She joined Sidley & Austin in Chicago as an associate in 1989 and in 1991 was named partner. Sesquicentennial Mini-course on Evolving Mainland China-Taiwan-Hong Kong Relations
The Department of Political Science will offer a special mini-course on Evolving Mainland China-Taiwan-Hong Kong Relations, (POL 295.03) during the first two weeks of the 1996 Fall semester in conjunction with Grinnell's Sesquicentennial celebra tion. This course will be taught by Byron Weng, who is Professor of Government and Public Administration at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Weng is a distinguished scholar who has written extensively on Chinese politics. He was Heath Visiting Professor at Grinnell during the Fall semester of 1991.
This course will examine the three sets of bilateral relations among mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. It will include consideration of Ameri can interests and involvement, and an in depth analysis of Beijing's "one country, two systems" policy as practiced in Hong Kong. Camera Buff is one of the earliest feature films by the recently deceased Krzystof Kieslowski, celebrated director of The Decalogue and more recently the highly acclaimed trilogy Blue, White and Red. In this highly entertaining movie about movies, a factory worker buys an 8 mm camera to record his newborn daughter's development but soon becomes obsessed with filming and begins to photograph things the authorities would rather not have exposed, resulting in an entertaining and perceptive mixture of social satire and Keatonesque comedy.
Based on a novel by Dick King-Smith, Babe is the story of an intelligent swine talented in sheep-herding. An inventive, live-action comedy with state of the art special effects, the film was nominated for Academy Award "Best Picture" and won for "Best Visual Effects." Renae Mcneil, an African American feminist and playwright will perform Dont Speak My Mother's Name in Vain, Thursday, April 18, at 7 p.m. in Harris Cinema. Completely Astonished: Works in Progress, works by Jessica Frederick '96 opened this Monday, April 15 in the Terrace Art Gallery. A reception for this show will be held Thursday evening, April 18 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gallery. The public is invited. This show will run through Friday, April 19. Be sure to stop in at the Forum Terrace Gallery to attend the reception this Thursday, and enjoy Jessica's "completely astonishing" show. The gallery is open during regular Forum hours.
On Sunday evening April 21, Grinnell's Collegium Musicum will present an evening of early music written in decades of the 40's and 90's during the period 1290's - 1740's. In conjunction with celebrations of Iowa and Grinnell of 150 years ago and because we are currently poised on the brink of a turn into a new millenium, the concert focuses on topical themes expressed in music at century and half-century turns in earlier eras. Some such themes are easily predictable for waning periods; others are tied more closely to concepts and events of their times.
The ensemble, under the direction of associate prof. Elizabeth Hays, consists of 13 instrumentalists and three singers. Replica period instru ments will include recorders, crumhorns, viols, vielle, viola, baroque cello, gothic harp, renaissance guitar, xylophone, and a variety of early percussion. Composers featured are Machaut, Landini, Isaac, Cara, Gervaise, Victoria, Scheidt, Pachelbel, and J. S. Bach. The concert starts at 8 p.m. in Herrick Chapel. All are cordially invited.
International Percussion Hall of Fame drumset artist Jim Chapin will present an artist class Tuesday April 16 (today!) from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in Fine Arts 106.
Mr. Chapin will talk about the history of Jazz drumming and also will spend a great deal of time showing how to gain hand/foot speed, technical control, and endurance while playing drumset and other percussion. Chapin is considered one of the world's most accomplished drumset players, and is the father of the 1970's folk singing legend Harry Chapin.
The class is free and open to the public. Come hear one of the fastest drummers ever and the leading innovator of be-bop/jazz drumming techniques today at 5:30!!

The Gerson Institute is looking for students with an interest in alternative medicine. The Gerson Institute, a San Diego-based nonprofit organization, provid ing education, training and outreach in the nutritional treatment of cancer and other degenerative diseases is looking for students with an interest in alternative medicine. They should possess a background or experience in one or more of the following areas: biology, chemistry, marketing, grant writing, fundraising, medical research. The Registrar's Office will be accepting Trial Schedule of Courses cards for the Fall 1996-97 semester from 8:00 a.m. Monday, April 22 to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, May 2. You should have received all necessary materials and instructions in your campus box, and arranged to meet with your adviser. Remember, your adviser has your blank trial schedule of courses card, not the Registrar. If you did not receive a schedule in your box, contact the mailroom. If you are not able to preregister by the May 2 deadline, you will have to wait until after course closures have been processed, and then have your card signed and dated by the appropriate instructors before submitting it to the registrar. Preregistration drop/add dates will be an nounced at a later date.
Please complete and return the green registration form for Commencement (if you have not already done so). This form should be returned immedi ately to the office of student affairs. If you need another form, contact Carol Ahrens, x3702.
Siblings of graduating seniors attending Grinnell College may request essential student status by calling the office of student affairs, x3702 by May 13. This status entitles you to meals beginning with the evening meal on Friday, May 17 through the Commencement picnic. (You must
vacate the dorms by on Monday, May 20 at 6 p.m.). If you have problems with this time, please contact the housing office in student affairs, x3700.)
Essential student status forms from departments and offices are also due to student affairs by Friday, May 3.
Get your work ready for this year's juried student art show. Students may enter up to 3 original matted or mounted works created since January 1, 1995. Works should be submitted Friday, May 3rd from 2-5 p.m. in the painting studio of Fine Arts where they will be judged by Professor Greg Gomez '80 of Wellesley College. Cash Prizes! The SGA shuttle to Iowa City will leave the Forum parking lot at 10:15 a.m., arrive at the University of Iowa Student Union at 11:30 a.m., depart from the student union at 4:00 p.m., and arrive at the Forum parking lot at 5:15 p.m. Sign up at the Forum Information Desk by Friday noon for 6 dollars.

·Grinnell House Monitor Applications
Dining Services is now accepting applications for Grinnell House monitors for the 1996-97 school year. Those students interested in being a Grinnell House Monitor should submit a letter detailing their reasons for wanting to be a monitor and three letters of reference to the Dining Service Office. Deadline for complete applications is Friday May 3rd at 5:00 p.m.
Grinnell House monitors live in Grinnell House and are on duty from approximately 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. each day as well as from noon to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. There are two monitors who share responsi bilities for house coverage. Monitors
are primarily responsible for attending to guest check-in and attending to guest inquiries. For further details, please check with the Director of Dining Services located in Main Hall.
·Student Media Positions for Fall '96
The Student Publications and Radio Committee (SPARC) will be posting job descriptions in the post office for media heads for fall '96. Editorships for the S&B, The Gum, The Freehand Press, Grinnell Review , and Cyclone, as well as station manager for KDIC are up for hire.
