Sequence

Level One

Level one forms the basic language sequence and prepares students in the fundamentals of the reading, speaking, and listening skills. In all these courses, materials are selected from both Spain and Latin America as well as from literary and non-literary sources.

Level Two

The second level is the bridge between the basic language sequence and the 300 level. SPN 285 develops the reading, discussion and writing skills while focusing on diverse texts from Spain and Latin American and including visual as well as written materials.

  • 285 Readings and Discussion of Hispanic Texts

Level Three

The third level of the program consists of four 300 level courses. Two deal with Latin American materials and two focus on Spain: These courses introduce students to advanced work in the Department and emphasize student discussion and analysis of the texts.

  • 311 Traditions of Independent Spanish America
  • 315 Creativity and Dissidence in Modern Spanish America
  • 312 Literary Traditions of 20th-Century Spain
  • 314 Contemporary Spanish Narrative

Level Four

The fourth level of the program consists of five courses. Two examine Latin American topics, two treat Peninsular topics, and one focuses on language. These courses build on the skills and knowledge acquired in the student's previous work at the third level.

  • 377 Modernity and Innovation in Contemporary Spanish America
  • 383 The Spanish American Colonial World
  • 385 Cervantes and his World
  • 386 Studies in Medieval and Golden Age Literature

The Department also offers in English an interdisciplinary introduction to Latin American Cultural Studies (SPN 221) which constitutes a foundational course for the Latin American Studies Concentration.
