Education:

B.A. Sociology, Brown University, 1971
Ph.D., Sociology, Princeton University, 1978

Research and Teaching Interests:

The Intersection of Psychological and Sociological Social Psychology
The Organizational Analysis of Non-profit Organizations
Deviance and Criminology
The Effectiveness of Justifications, Excuses, and Apologies, Especially in Mitigating or Exacerbating the Perceived Seriousness of Acts of Sexual and Racial Harassment

Scholarly Activities:

During my sabbatical in 1996-1997, I co-directed, with Kent McClelland, an ethnographic study of a local human-services agency, Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA). This study is funded under an "Early Head Start" Health and Human Services grant for 1995-1997. We are interested in MICA's success in transforming itself into a "learning organization" despite the difficult environment for non-profit social service agencies.

Grinnell Faculty Representative, ACM Committee on Minority Concerns, 1992-97
