David Brooks is the kind of writer who has to be read on two levels. On the one hand, you have a conservative who deeply buys into the myth that the essence of American liberalism is an elitist disregard for the majority of the country. This sounds ridiculous and offensive to Grinnellian ears, though in ignoring it we should be careful not to ignore its pervasiveness.

Columnist classifies college humor types
Sitting down to write my S&B column this week, I feel a little unsettled. Now is the time when things like magnolia trees and term papers are blossoming, and attention span and the winter wind have blown on to distant peer institutions. It is hard to spend time on a humor column when it is the season to be frolicking outdoors or synthesizing critical sources.

Americans: fit your attitude and stuff in a carry-on
In my mind, there’s a fine line between being an accepted nomad and a perpetual tourist; I would prefer to be regarded as the former. For Spaniards, there’s a fine line between a real gypsy (or “gitano”) and an American tourist; they snub populations on both sides of the line with different degrees of fervor. Spaniards have an ambiguous hatred for the “gitano” population in Southern Madrid and more of a disgusted bafflement towards American visitors.
