Quit glorifying communism
It has become obvious in the last semester that Grinnell College has not adequately confronted some of the political symbols that represent mass-murder, repression, and the darkest moments of 20th century humanity’s struggle for freedom. And I’m afraid I do not speak of the swastika; I think our community continues to harbor a healthy revulsion for that symbol and all it represents. I am writing, instead, about the symbols of communist totalitarianism—the hammer and sickle, CCCP t-shirts or hockey jerseys, Soviet flags, Mao’s visage, and Che Guevara icons—worn for fashion and displayed around campus by the more superficial and callous members of our community.

I know you’ve seen all of those prospective students running around the past few weekends. They all want to know what there is to do in Grinnell. Actually, even with your myriad social experience behind you, you may be wondering what the town of Grinnell has to offer if you’re not feeling like shakin’ your thang at Harris or arguing with your floormates about who has the most homework.

What’s behind that veil?
Last Friday night I was at a pre-party for the annual “Mary B. James” cross-dressing party, checking out all the lovely attire. Men wore bras, lipstick and tight-fitting skirts; women wore suspenders, loose clothing and ties. We were showing that gender is socially constructed, we were making fun of beauty norms, we were dancing.
