What if Grinnell chose the pope?
Every Semana Santa (Holy Week), those in todo el mundo puts away their mini-skirts, cigarettes and stops making out and turns very, very Catholic. Thousands of men, women and children don long tunics, and conical hats under masks (looks a lot like the KKK, actually), hold huge candles and parade through the streets at night for six hours at a time followed by groups of 40 men hauling two-ton floats topped by life-size polychrome figures of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. The community and a whole flock of tourists come out every night of Semana Santa, year after year, to demonstrate their heart-felt, if temporary, religious zeal. [more]

“Culture of life” needs liberal response
For the Republican Party, it must have seemed like Christmas come early. A few short months after President Bush talked up his newest catchphrase, “culture of life,” in his State of the Union address, Terri Schiavo dropped into their political laps. Rookie Senator Mel Martinez (R-FL) apparently thought so, when he accidentally handed a memo to Tom Harkin (D-IA) that was meant for other GOP Senators. [more]

WTF?
The recent spate of vandalism reveals that student frustration with the institution of Grinnell has finally hit the breaking point. Since the institution cares little about students’ well-being, students should care little about the well-being of the institution and feel free to act out violent fantasies against it when heavily intoxicated.
