Grinnell defeats Ripon, history
Grinnell football hadn’t beaten conference foe Ripon College since 1998, and was coming off a disappointing 3-7 2003 campaign that included a season-opening 26-21 loss to the Red Hawks. But there was something different about this particular warm, sunny Saturday afternoon, however, as the Pioneers battled the visiting Red Hawks for 60 minutes. There were over 400 fans in attendance to witness an amazing second half comeback, capped off by a fourth quarter 10-play, 93-yard drive to win it by a score of 27-24. The victory over Ripon gives the Pioneers an early advantage in the Midwest Conference standing, at 1-0.

An opening shutout kicked off the Brian Jaworski Era in Grinnell, with the Pioneers scoring a 1-0 victory over Cornell last Wednesday. The Pioneers played Central College at home on Thursday before departing for Minnesota and a match with rival Carleton College on Saturday. The conference opener in Grinnell Sept. 18th against Beloit will test a Grinnell team which lost three key defensive starters to graduation last spring; the Buccaneers return three all-conference selections and were picked by the Midwest Conference coaches to finish second in league play.
