Combat duty, not Guard service, was real deal in Vietnam comes second to active duty
For more than six months now the military service, or lack thereof, of our presidential candidates has been widely discussed, especially over this past month. As someone who came of age during the Vietnam War and faced the military draft in the same way as John Kerry and George Bush, let me see if I can shed a bit of light on the subject. [more]

Grinnell school board: a fair and balanced view
Whether we students recognize it or not, our community extends beyond our campus borders. The town of Grinnell provides us with valuable services and a number of useful businesses. Since we spend four years utilizing its perks, we, at a minimum, should invest some of our time and energy in making the community a better place. A great opportunity presents itself on Tuesday, September 14 when local school board elections are held. [more]

I can’t hate Dubya
Listening to political discussions around campus, I sometimes notice an almost-palpable, even visceral, hatred for George W. Bush. Although I too disagree with his administration, policies, method of securing his office, and (especially) the ethical system he and his co-workers use, I cannot hate him. I cannot hate him becausezz I might have turned out much like him, had circumstances been just slightly different. [more]

Gun rack: regional nationalism or just macho affection?
Apart from an appreciation for the television series “Law and Order,” which borders on obsession, the slim amount of my experience with the firearm itself could fit within the snug confines of a round – or, at least, what I imagine the dimensions of a bullet to be.  [more]

Carbs abound in the dining hall
We all know that the food offered in Cowles and Quad, Grinnell’s finest dining options, is not always great. The salad bar is not always as well-stocked as I’d like it to be, the coffee has made me feel very sick on more than one occasion, and I’ve had moments in which eating grass seemed better than going into Quad. But, I’m going to come right out and say it--I love the dining halls of Grinnell. [more]
