Nationals treasure
Sarah Stayer ‘06 represented the Grinnell College swimming and diving teams at the National Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in Holland, Mich, becoming the first Grinnell female diver to earn outright All-American honors. She managed a seventh-place finish in the 1-meter diving competition on March 10, and her 15th-place finish on the 3-meter board gave her Honorable Mention All-American recognition for the third time in her career. For Stayer, it was her third trip to Nationals. She finished 12th on the 1m springboard in 2003 and 16th in the 3m competition in 2004. The S&B talked with Stayer this week.

Grinnell track and field was slightly shorthanded for the Division III 3-Way meet on Mar. 30 during the team’s spring break trip to Florida. For violating the school’s alcohol policy, 30 of the 37 players who traveled with the team, or 81% of the roster, were benched for the meet. Fortunately for Grinnell, no team scores were kept at the meet. Of the eligible individuals, sprinter Kyle Perry ’08 and thrower Chad Rapp ’06 led the way. Perry won the long jump competition and finished third and fifth in the 100m and 200m races, respectively, while Rapp had a personal best in the hammer throw. … The track and field team hit another snag at the Florida relays, held Mar. 24-26 in Gainesville, Fla., as did all the other teams present. The last two days of competition were cancelled due to lightning. … The Pioneer baseball team snapped a seven-game losing streak on Sunday that included a doubleheader loss to Monmouth the day before with two four-run victories in a doubleheader sweep of Coe. But on Wednesday, the winning ways subsided as Grinnell came up on the short end of an 8-1 score against 12th-ranked Penn. [more]
On Deck
Both men’s golf and men’s and women’s track and field head to Waverly, Iowa this weekend. Men’s golf has its first meet in Iowa in 2005, against host Wartburg, with tee-offs at 8 a.m. today and tomorrow. Track and field will take part in the Wartburg Invite on Saturday at 10 a.m. … Baseball looks to get its first conference wins in Galesburg, Ill. with a doubleheader Saturday against Knox. After that, the Pioneers get a rematch with 12th-ranked William Penn on Tuesday, Apr. 12. … The red-hot softball team looks to keep it going this weekend with the MWC Classic Tourney at the Dawson Field Complex in Janesville, Wisc. In the course of two days, the Pioneers will face conference foes Ripon, St. Norbert, Beloit, Carroll, and Lawrence.

Storm season
The Pioneers were co-champions of last weekend’s Hy-Vee Invitational Softball Tournament, bringing their record to 6-5. The Pioneers have won six of their last seven, and with a talented crop of first-years, the Pioneers have high hopes for the 2005 campaign.
