United we stand rings a bit cliché
“What do we want? Economic diversity! How do we get it? Lower Tuition!” was one of my favorite chants during the “protest” of February 18. Despite the best efforts of Mark Henry, however, the trustees called our bluff. Not only was there a pathetic number of people who showed up (at most 200), but the chants were uninspired and fell through after a couple of minutes. The trustees who didn’t dismiss us, mocked us by pumping their arms as if they planned to join or protest. One went as far as to take pictures, to show his business buddies the uninspired hippies who showed up to his meeting. How cute.

Spring cleaning your off-campus house
Robins chirping, trees budding, class work slipping. Yes, it’s that time of year again. Every spring, many poor souls embark on the toil and tedium that is spring cleaning. Those of us who returned from break to find our apartments dirtier, smellier, and darker than we remembered have also begun fanaticizing about Mr. Clean. But really, “spring cleaning” sounds dreary, doesn’t it? Then forget it, and declare instead the Carnival of Clean Challenge! Wow! Doesn’t that sound way funner?

Flight delay causes humorous freak out
As I look forward to my future outside the Grinnell bubble, I sometimes start to feel a bit lacking in “real world” skills. Sure, I can write a paper, but words like “insurance” and “finance” usually make me feel vaguely nauseous, and contact with non-Grinnell grown-ups sometimes makes me feel like I belong to a different species. (“No, I don’t want to talk about my life plans. But I will talk about Ulysses if you want.”) However, every once in a while, a moment comes along that helps me to realize that maybe, just maybe, I’m not as ill-equipped for the world as I think I am.

A survey of your self-governance views
I believe I left off three weeks before break with my interpretation of how the events of 1965 eventually led to co-ed dorms and the extreme relaxation of housing regulations. I say “my interpretation of events” because I did not find any headlines proclaiming the “Inauguration of self-governance at Grinnell College” in my three-hour perusal of the S&B archives. I blame my failure partly on my procrastination, but mostly on the student(s) who invented self-governance for not ascribing it with a recognizable name that could have been used in the headlines for my benefit.

It’s complicated
Like most of the student body, nearly all of us at the S&B understood Sophomore Paul Wainright’s Plans entry as a joke, if in poor taste. Unlike some outspoken members of the student body, however, Wainright’s arrest did not foster in us a burning desire to lock arms against narcs and The Man. The issue contains layers of complexity that no singular response could effectively address.
