How to make ends meet without room and board
Those of us who live off campus get a rude awakening when we realize how many things are no longer included in our Grinnell bill. There’s rent, of course, and food, phone bills, gas bills, electric bills, toilet paper, Windex, Drain-O, Endust, 409, garbage bags, a broom or vacuum cleaner, Glade plug-ins, a fire extinguisher, furniture, winter window weatherizer, a shovel, wine glasses, Gladware, rugs, curtains, tea cozies, and so on. These expenses are much more depressing when they don’t simply appear on a bill listed as “Room and Board,” but rather crush your soul and ravage your wallet on a daily basis. [more]

Thank God for creating helpful technophiles
Like many people, I am clueless about technology. I have no idea how my computer works; it just does, kind of like my refrigerator and the process of photosynthesis. For all I know, there are a bunch of little gnomes crawling around my hard drive and pulling on wires. [more]

Time warp: tracing roots of self-government
In order to uncover the history of self-governance at this institution, I spent several hours today skimming through microfilm in basement of Burling. If you’ve never ventured into the Microfilm Room (right next to the Listening Room), you really should. It’s a wonderful place: quiet, dark, lonely … good for homework, bad for mental health.
