At a Joint Board meeting Tuesday night, an accusation of lying provoked Vice President for College Services John Kalkbrenner to confront SGA Assistant Treasurer Matt Cleinman ‘06 in an apparently physically intimidating manner, according to several witnesses. [more]

Wallets, other items Waltz away
As students unsuspectingly waltzed the night away at Harris on Saturday, their wallets, cash, P-Cards, and cameras were being stolen from the coatroom. “At Harris Center over the weekend we had nine incidents,” said Steve Briscoe, director of Security. “One may have been from a previous weekend at the Harris Center, theft of a camera.” [more]

What’s up with initiatives?
This week, signs proclaiming that students are officially boycotting Coke products appeared in the dining halls and on Coke machines around campus. Dining Services put up the signs are a result of the Nov. 19 round of student initiatives, but action on most student initiatives won’t begin until next semester. [more]

Q&A: Aping around
“In ten years the population of wild great apes will be extinct,” said Duane Rumbaugh as he began last Friday’s lecture. Rumbaugh cited Kirk Brocker, director of the Great Ape Trust Research Center opening outside of Des Moines. Speaking to a full audience in the Forum South Lounge, Rumbaugh spoke to students about the importance of saving and studying great apes, humans’ closest relatives, whose natural habitat is rapidly disappearing. Focus on Fencing Club
At Grinnell College, starting a club is just a matter of filing some paperwork with SGA. When students attempted to start a fencing club here this semester, however, they learned that it could be another matter entirely to keep it going. While Fencing Club began with high hopes, it’s now become defunct until next semester, when its organizers hope to become more active. [more]

Victoria’s Secret protesters get early escort out by police
They didn’t expect the protest to last very long, but members of Free The Planet (FTP) were still surprised at how quickly police ended their demonstration against Victoria’s Secret. Twelve Grinnell students drove down to the Merle-Hay Mall in Des Moines on Dec. 2 to draw attention to the lingerie retailer’s use of non-recycled paper in its catalogs. [more]

Since the beginning of the fiscal year, the college’s endowment has inched up less than one percent to a little over $1.3 billion as of the closing of the stock market Tuesday, according to College Treasurer David Clay. [more]
