Let’s get stupid!
The cross-country team christened “Stupid Week” years ago to celebrate the freedom to, well, not run. After winning their 18th Midwest Conference championship in 19 years (see Monmouth, 1994), finishing fifth in the Central Region and sending Justin Riley ‘06 to the NCAA Championships, the time is nigh for the self-imposed destruction of these finely-tuned athletes.

Eric Walsh ‘05 hit two free throws with seconds remaining to lift Grinnell men’s basketball to its first victory on Saturday, 130-128 at Wartburg in overtime. But three days later Grinnell came within a whisker of pulling off an even more impressive win. Down 23 points with two minutes gone in the second half, the Pioneers outscored host Mt. Mercy—who had beaten them a week earlier by 19 points—55-33 over a 14-minute span and pulled to within 108-107 with 4:21 to play. The Mustangs pulled away from there, however, outscoring Grinnell 20-9 down the stretch. The loss drops Grinnell, which opened with 13 straight wins last year, to 1-4 overall. … So far, women’s basketball’s three-point numbers have been a good indicator of their success. In its season-opening 73-70 win against Eureka in the first round of the Elmhurst College Tournament, Grinnell drained 35% of its treys and 14 overall, five by Anna Veit ‘05. However, Grinnell shot 27.3% and 28.6% in its two defeats, to Elmhurst College and Luther. … Women’s swimming and diving topped the University of Chicago on Nov. 20 by a 183-115 tally, but the men’s swimming and diving team fell 183-106 at the same meet. … Only 53 schools in the nation had both their men’s and women’s soccer team earn NSCAA/Adidas College Team Academic awards. Put Grinnell on the list, for the second consecutive year. … The men’s and women’s soccer teams also put a combined 19 players on Academic All-Conference, helping Grinnell College lead the Midwest Conference again in that category, with 62 overall. Women’s cross country led all Grinnell teams with 17 Academic All-Conference runners.

Men’s basketball’s lone “home” game of the Fall Semester takes place on Saturday at Marshalltown Community College against Martin Luther. Tipoff is 3 p.m. … Women’s basketball opens its Midwest Conference schedule with a noon tipoff at Illinois College on Saturday. The Pioneers will also play non-conference foe Cornell on Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. … Men’s and women’s swimming and diving head to the Mutual of Omaha Invite in Omaha, Neb. today and tomorrow. For both teams, it will be the last competition before Winter Break.
