Breaking New Ground
Since 1975, Alternative Break has been a Grinnell tradition. Through hands-on service projects and communal living, the aim of these student-led trips is to allow students to learn and grow in an environment free of faculty and staff, and illustrate and implement the principles of self-governance. Beginning as a small program dedicated to serving nereby locations, primarily Des Moines, Alternative Break travels all over the country, as well as internationally. Past service locales include Boston, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Mexico. Over fall break students participated in four Alternative Break trips. Their destinations included Minneapolis, East St. Louis, Chicago and Mankato Minn. [more]
