Renovation begins on the Strand theater
Last Saturday at 10:30 a.m., a celebration was held in front of the soon-to-be renovated Strand Theater to kick off the formation of “The Marquee Club,” an organization designed to raise funds for the theater’s renovation. Before the event began, movie theater popcorn was given away and people were encouraged to enter in a raffle for various prizes such as movie posters and gift baskets. By the time speeches began, about 50 people were assembled on the street in front of the building. [more]

Reveling in the Renaissance
On Saturday Oct. 11, DAG house will be sponsoring a Renaissance fair from 1 to 6 p.m. on the Forum Beach. DAG house coordinator Thomas Alexander ’05 is hoping to draw a crowd of about 1,000 people. “I’m hoping a good part of campus will show up,” Alexander said. His wish may come true with the help of both the campus SCA (Society of Creative Anachronism) and the town SCA . DAG is inviting anyone who wants to come, including the townspeople of Grinnell and families visiting for family weekend. [more]

Cultural exchange
Every year the Grinnell community welcomes four special guests of the foreign language departments. This year, having survived a competitive application process for the language assistant positions, Francois Massonnat from France, Jan Maurischat from Germany, Dina Moukhametjanova from Russia and Maritza Betances from the Dominican Republic have joined the Grinnell community. Their job is to facilitate the language learning of non-native speakers by providing an environment in which the students have a chance to practice speaking the language and to interact with a native speaker to learn more about the people and the culture.
