New Cultural film reviewer takes on State Fair
State Fair is ostensibly being shown as part of the Roots of Renewal program as a celebration of Iowa. And while there are several montages devoted to the sights and sounds of the Iowa State fair (fortunately there are no state fair smells which include livestock, carnies and several metric tons of funnel cake batter), there is more to learn about Hollywood from this movie than about rural Iowa. Wonder: comedy and wit
The Wonder: A Woman Keeps a Secret is a play of its time with comedy that is witty, farcical and bawdy, often bordering on lewd. Written and set in the early 18th century, The Wonder, by Susanna Centlivre, is a typical play of the Restoration period. The Restoration period, right after Oliver Cromwell’s protectorate, saw the return of the monarchy in Charles II in 1660. With Charles II came a backlash to the Puritanism that had been running rampant, including a return of theatre, which had technically been banned. [more]

Workshop by poets Pankey and Atkinson
Award-winning poet-couple and professors at George Mason University, Eric Pankey and Jennifer Atkinson will visit Grinnell College on Mon., Oct. 13 in conjunction with the Grinnell Writer’s Conference. They will hold a poetry revision workshop at 4:15 p.m. in ARH 318, followed by a reading in Faulconer Gallery at 8 p.m. [more]

This Thursday, Oct. 16, three solo female artists will be making their Grinnell debut at a study break provided by Bob’s Underground Café to give students a respite from mid-sems cramming.
