Grinnell College’s 1 RADICAL CHEERLEADERS held their first cheer of the semester on Tuesday to raise campus awareness of masturbation as part of Love Your Body week. ... Grinnell experienced cooler than usual temperatures this week, dropping as low as 32F on Tuesday night, only five degrees warmer than that day’s record low, according to weather.com. In addition, a freeze warning went into effect on Wednesday night, bringing an end to the growing season. The weather is expected to get warmer next week. ... Chilly air and overcast skies weren’t enough to keep students and staff from 2 wrestling in a 380-gallon pool of Jell-O last Saturday afternoon. SGA’s All-Campus Events hosted the event with the help of Facilities Management and Dining Services. ... The Iowa Peace Institute’s board of directors agreed to merge with Grinnell College at a board meeting on Sept. 23. The merger includes a $650,000 gift to the college that will go toward developing a peace studies program at the college. The institute also plans to donate the building it now occupies, located one block from campus. President of the IPI, Greg Buntz, said it’s a “natural evolution for [the IPI] to look to the college to carry on what we’re doing.” Buntz added that a merger with the college stabilizes the institute’s precarious financial base. “It’s been extremely difficult to raise money in the economy we’re in,” Buntz said. The IPI was founded in 1986 to facilitate conflict resolution throughout the state of Iowa.  The proposed Peace Studies program is scheduled to start in the fall semester of 2004. [more]

'Cold Water'
International Student Orientation is about “preparing international students for what’s to come at Grinnell: cold water culture shock,” said Alok Shah ‘04, office assistant to the Office of International Student Services. Shah, who helped run this year’s International Student Orientation added that the week helps with acclimatization and homesickness. [more]

Kennedy for Kerry
Packed into a crowded gym at Hoover High School in Des Moines, Ted Kennedy and John Kerry rallied students, farmers, nurses, veterans and others about the national health care crisis and Kerry’s presidential campaign. The two senators from Massachusetts traveled to Iowa this past Saturday to kick off a week of meetings to organize supporters of Iowans for Kerry in 99 counties. [more]

High education must supplement the Tuskegee programme. The race must have leaders and they must be trained in institutions of higher learning. Washington’s policy he thinks to be a positive evil when it comes to making the negro character submissive.
