Week of hip hop heaven
A wave of break beats and smooth lyrics broke upon Grinnell campus this week, thanks to the efforts of a committed group of hip hop devotees. Since February, Derek Chandler and Ned Levy (both ‘04) have been working with bands, college officials and fans of hip hop culture to bring Grinnell’s first-ever Hip Hop Festival to fruition.

While an audience looked on, Rahmaan Statik brought a face to life with quick, sweeping passes of a spray can. With a forgotten crowd behind him and three vast pieces of plywood in front of him he began his work. A patch of brown quickly became a nose and two eyes emerged from a pair of yellow streaks. Pausing to change cans, Statik seemed to suddenly recall his spectators and he slowly turned to speak.

Running and skating and breakdancing: Oh My!
Cross country and track athlete Dave Theriault ’04 doesn’t think he has any business being on a dance floor. Nevertheless, Theriault and a mob of other runners will be flaunting their footwork in Dance Troupe’s spring show this weekend, Arrivals and Departures, in a piece titled Airport Dances. Theriault thinks runners agreed to take part in Airport Dances because of the sheer ridiculousness of the idea. “Let’s take a bunch of uncoordinated fools and put them in the artistic arena,” he said. The piece, choreographed by Shawn Womack, Theatre, brings together an unlikely group of artists and athletes to depict scenes and atmospheres of an airport.

Playing with the big boys
B: Boy howdy. We’re like kids in a candy store this weekend, with all the available adolescent audiovisual opportunities. But, all work and no play make Jack a dull boy, so we’d better get on with the reviews, which will separate the men from the boys. But we’ll handle them with kid gloves and spare the rod and spoil the child. We’ll also go to clichefinder.com in search of more bad clichés concerning kids. Boys will be boys.

Latina Dance Project: not just salsa!
A week of multicultural dancing will end with a grand finale with a performance by the Latina Dance Project this Sunday at 8 p.m. in Roberts theatre.
