Clothing Darwinist
There are times, during Grinnell life, when the Real World briefly ceases to be a scary, looming headache and actually starts to seem appealing. Every once in a while I start envisioning myself living in a Really Big City (like New York or London) eating Real Food (like fresh mozzarella), talking to Real People (that might be older than 22) and getting Real Sleep (like maybe six or seven hours a night!) I can become briefly lost in this reverie until I look more clearly at the daydream version of Emily and realize with horror that she is wearing Real Clothes (e.g., stuff that doesn¡¦t double as pajamas). Random Rants

A word on make believe
Paraphrasing the dictionary, fantasizing is the free play of creative imagination and results in a daydream that can be conceived or expressed. But I¡¦m not just talking about your innocent what-am-I-going-to-buy-at-the-store fantasies. I am more concerned about sexual fantasies: from here out, when I say fantasy I mean daydreams and imaginings imbued with the power to arouse and excite. These fantasies can be anything your mind can create: ideas as innocent as rehearsing asking someone out to ideas as brutal as penetration with a knife resulting in death. [more]

And now for something completely different
Grinnell is a sort of counter-culture haven. Many of the students here could be mistaken for cast members of Hair. But stay with me here, for Grinnell to have counter-culture itself, it would have to be the opposite of the current culture. Therefore, counter-culture would be something as unheard of as a conservative speaker or Christian play. [more]
