False alarm
A relatively harmless one pound jar of ammonium perchlorate was the center of campus attention from March 18 to 19 as campus officials tried to determine how to dispose of the chemical. The state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) initially advised exploding the jar, as it was too hazardous to transport or dispose of in any other way. However, that recommendation was based on an incorrect description of the chemical. Half a campus evacuation and one bomb squad later, college officials learned that the chemical was actually safe enough to dissolve it in water and flush down a drain. [more]

Gaunt plans to appeal guilty verdict
On March 16, 2004 a jury found Library Assistant Chris Gaunt guilty of assaulting a peace officer following her arrest at a November 16, 2003 rally at the Iowa Nation Guard headquarters. Gaunt pled not guilty and plans to appeal the verdict. On March 30, 2004 Gaunt received a 60 day suspended sentence for assault, with three days credit for time served. She is on probation. [more]

Convocation speaker Frances Moore Lappe, author of the three-million-copy best-seller, Diet for a Small Planet (1971), awakened the world to issues of human-made hunger. A recipient of 16 honorary degrees, Lappe will receive her 17th this May from Grinnell College.
