Backstrom braves the fine arts
Arts are for everyone, right? Not at Grinnell, or so many think. There is a popular belief that classes in the arts are reserved for those gifted with amazing artistic, musical or other creative talent. Grinnellians who think they can’t carry a tune in a bucket, have two left feet, or never progressed past finger-painting, often feel that there is no place in academia for them to develop and refine their creative side. Arts for Dummies will provide a sneak peak into Grinnell arts classes through the eyes of the non-artsy who have dared to venture into art, music, performance art or creative writing classes.

Poet Hofmann finds English a menace
Michael Hofmann, the first poet this year brought to Grinnell by the Grinnell Writer’s Conference, stands at the podium at the Forum South Lounge. He seems almost nervous. Hofmann has been reading for nearly a half hour, and a strange smile passes across his thin face. He is about to read a poem, one of his favorites; there is a glint in his eye, a rise to his face. But when he speaks the short piece, only one or two lines long; his breath consumes the entirety of it. His words are inaudible.
