Darby Gym (1943-2004)
After responding to extraordinary demands put on the current facilities, an enormous building complex, in an architectural style incongruous with the rest of the campus, was being constructed on the northern half of the Grinnell College campus. Named after some of the largest donors in Grinnell history, it had the latest in modern amenities. Was it the East Campus building campaign of 2003? No, it was the Darby Gymnasium building campaign of 1943.

Darby II: The Return
Darby Gymnasium and the Physical Education Complex have long been institutions at Grinnell College; however, the College has decided that due to their age and outmoded space and equipment, they need to be replaced.

The power of two
Darby Gym is not just a place for Grinnell athletes to make sports history, but a place to honor sports history. Beside the banners lining the rafters for volleyball and basketball team accomplishments, two banners hang from the south wall of Darby honoring the stars of Grinnell’s last basketball powerhouse program, the women’s teams of the late 80s and early 90s. Number 40, Laura VanSickle ’90 powered the Pioneer women to their first winning record, and number 30, Missy Sharer ’91 led the team to a Midwest Conference Championship in 1991.
