Minority report: a note to American Grinnellians
So, what is with international students here in Grinnell? To pull off an eye-catching politically sensational beginning, I wish to draw an analogy between international students and democracy, something familiar that gets much discussed among and about Americans, something that rings a bell. Like democracy, they come in two textures: the thin texture and the thick texture. The thin one would say, “Hey, I’ve got my own business; you’ve got yours. We respect each other’s preferences, but we have our own sweet way and that’s it.” What a liberal spirit! Four years here is just a sojourn, a Tzang Tsu dream, where they dream that they are truly Grinnellians. Then they wake up and wonder if they are a Grinnellian dreaming himself a sojourner, an alien. The thick texture, however, would shout out, “Everything is our business!” And then they run around trying to convert corn-fed souls into cosmo cells by alerting American Grinnellians to the fact that indeed, there are people that live farther than Hawaii and come all the way here to whine and dine with them. The thick texture would then be the relentless republican-ist who goes out of their ways to make sure everyone is able to express their own interests through exposure to a more culturally diverse scenario and consequently, to a wider range of choices.

Random Rants
Students speak out about what’s on their minds in 142 words, and you’re invited! If you have a random rant, email it to me at anderseb@grinnell.edu. After all, complaining in a public forum is always more fun than doing it alone.
