What now?: A collection of reactions to the events of 9/11
I pray that the turn our culture makes in response to this cataclysm isn’t into a reactionary darkness, where we believe it is adequate to answer evil by covering ourselves in our enemies’ blood. I want justice probably as much as anyone; I want punishment to be swift and complete. But I believe punishing the people who did this thing will be meaningless unless we do so only after we’ve thoroughly answered one simple question: What are we to them, that they could do such a thing to us?

7:15 a.m. Alarm goes off unusually early. Want to make good first impression by being on time for my 8 a.m. class. Cotton, my 17 year-old cat, sensing movement, nudges my face and asks for breakfast. I mumble that patience is a virtue.
