Planning for the Future

Erika Almanza: I will be an elementary teacher in Washington, D.C. for Teach for America. Also, I plan to marry Donald Brown, which will take place on January 2, 2004 on South Padre Island, Texas; start a new year, start a new life.

Sarah Alward: I’ll be somewhere in Japan (specific destination still unknown) with the JET program working as an assistant English teacher.

Michael Andersen: I’m going to write news stories for any publication that I can convince to pay me for them.

Arik Anderson: In the next two years, I'll be spending time living and working in Des Moines, Philadelphia, Sydney, and London. During that time, I hope to travel much and see a lot of the world.

Ruth Anderson: I plan on spending time next with family in Italy and Sweden and family friends in France. And also do some (low-budget) travelling in Europe. In fall 2004 I'm considering entering Starr King School for the Ministry, a Unitarian Universalist divinity school in Berkely, California, to pursue an MA in Religious Leadership for Social Change.

Marissa Andrews: Over the summer, I plan to work as a supervisor at the same nonprofit day camp in Chicago as I have for the past many years. I’m going to take a little time off and apply to graduate school for the spring, hoping that I will be accepted at the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis.

Meghan Arthur: I will be studying the art of midwifery in Ohio.

Taylor Augustine: I am going to be a nanny on the east coast while I apply to grad school for a Ph.D. in American Studies.

Lura Barber: If all goes well, I’ll be working for a non-profit organization in Chicago for the next year.

Sarah Barkley: I am planning on living and working and having fun in Des Moines. Hopefully I will land a good job, but if that fails, then I will use the time to decide whether to further my education and in what area.

Dan Bartell: This summer I will be working at the Art Institute of Chicago as a Museum Education Intern. In the fall I will be back in dear ol’ Grinnell completing my student teaching at Marshalltown High. After that, off to conquer the world...

Kate Bagshaw: I will be participating in a French Teaching Assistantship in Grenoble next year where I will be teaching e Elish to students for 12 hours a week. After that, I want to join the Peace Corps and head to Africa.

John Basler: I will be in Grinnell for the next year.

Megan Beaman: This summer I am coaching softball, but in the fall I plan on moving to an undefined ‘elsewhere’ to live it up. After a year or two I might return to school for a law degree specializing in civil and human rights.

Tom Beaudin: I am going to be living somewhere, doing something. Maybe working a job or going to school or maybe not.

Matthew Becker: I will be teaching special ed in New York City. And I will be living above the Pink Teacup.

Joe Benson: Next year, I’ll be making frequent trips back to Grinnell to stave off my boredom. I’ll also be making a trip out of the country somewhere for sometime.

Jeff Bergman: I’ve been awarded the Post-Baccalaureate Fellowship in the Humanities here at Grinnell. I’ll be working with Visiting Professor Jeffrey Nealon, as well as pursuing my own research on Cold War dystopian novels and totalitarianism in the contemporary world.

Leah Blasiak: I will be in MIT graduate school studying chem.

Nina Bilandzic: I’ll be working in a New York City law firm before I go to graduate school in the U.S. or the U.K.

Jimmy Bombulie: I am going to law school in the fall at either University of Michigan or University of Miami.

Jamie Bourdon: I will be reflecting poorly upon Grinnell College by staying in Grinnell for another year doing very, very little. He then plans to attend Villanova to study philosophy of religion.

Alison Brown: I am spending yet another semester in Grinnell, but this time to student teach and then I am fleeing the country to teach in Lesotho through Grinnell Corps.

Donald Brown: Next year I plan to attend George Washington University in DC to obtain my Master of Forensic Science. In 2004, I will marry my fiancee Erika Almanza in Texas.

Byll Bryce: I am attending an archaeological field school in Nebraska being held by Iowa State University. After that, I plan on volunteering at Kaibab National Forest in Ariz. Once the summer is over I will be anxiously awaiting a call from the Peace Corps., hopefully telling me they will be shipping me off asap.

Mary Laura Calhoun: I will be teaching special education in DC public schools as a Teach for America corps member. And I will love it.

Bonnie K. Carenen: I hope to be working for a year with the Council of Churches in Namibia, doing ecumenical human rights work like emigration and refugee services, AIDS education, environmental stewardship, resource distribution, crisis response, and supporting schools, hospitals, clinics, etc. (Hopefully I can meet up with [lundgre1] and [parr].) After that I plan to go to grad school.

Trevor Cassel: I’ll be working as a financial advisor for Northwestern Mutual here in Grinnell, IA.

Natalie Ceperley: Peace Corps. Mauritania. June 28th. Environmental Education.

Latrisha Chattin: I’ll be spending the next semester student teaching at the ACM Urban Education Program in Chicago. In December I’ll return home to Philadelphia to teach in the public school system.

Dave Chenault: I am moving to Enid, Oklahoma to attend graduate school in Cosmatology end marry my long-distance girlfriend, Enid.

Rashed Chowdhury: My plan for next year is to work as a research assistant for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington, D.C., studying Central Asian politics and economics.

Tak Chung: I will be going to enroll in a masters program at Imperial College, London.

Phil Cluphf: I have been accepted into an MA/Ph.D. program in the department of Romance Languages and Literature at Washington University in St. Louis. It looks like I will be there for the next six years getting my Ph.D. in Spanish.

Andy Cook: I’m student teaching in Newton Middle School next fall, working for six months, and then will be going to Haiti to teach math and run a nutrition program for a year.

Rick Corley: I will be in Grinnell next year working for the theatre department as the ”Fifth Year Design Technology Intern.” Basicially hat means that I will be Erik Sanning’s assistant.

Katie Coup: Tuesday after graduation, I will move to Paducah, Kentucky, where I will become an Assistant Instructor at Cryst-A-Kell Farm. Cryst-A-Kell specializes in American Saddlebred show horses, and I will be teaching lessons to students from age 6 on six up, and from beginner to world championship levels.

Michael Dalgleish: Next year I am going to be teaching English in France with a program run through the French Embassy and recommended by the French Dept.

Matthew Dank: I am going to Rutger’s Law School back in N.J., which will be my first step in world domination.

Marcos Davalos: Off to NYC to become a superstar and the male Madonna.

Atanas Djumaliev: I will be an investment banker in London.

Julie Dona: I will be studying the social support networks of low-income rural-urban migrants in Mumbai, India through a Fulbright grant.

Josh Dorner: Studying European Governance and Politics, French and Arabic at the London School of Economics.

Jesse Dubow: Cornell Law School.

Rebecca Eaton: The Grinnell Corps Fellowship in Nepal.

Marcos Escobar: I want to go and work in labor organizing in L.A. With some luck it should happen.

Soren Eustis: I will be attending Johns Hopkins University, working towards a Ph.D. in Chemistry.

Shira Fagan: I'll be living in Grinnell until August, then I'm moving to Milwaukee to implement my plans for world domination. Ok, that’s a lie. I'm moving to Milwaukee, making money for a while, and applying to advertising schools, THEN I'll take over the world.

Anne Feltovich: Grad School, University of Cincinnati, in Classics, for the Ph.D. Summer- archaeological excavations at Athens, Greece.

Zach Fletcher: I will be coaching football at Kenyon College next fall.

Gregory Fuller: I’m going to live with my wife in Newton until one of us gets around to finding a job, and then we’ll move somewhere else. I’m thinking DC area, which is where I’m from, and generally where we are looking.

Ellen Gallagher: I plan to spend the summer in Minneapolis and then go to Latin America (probably Mexico, Ecuador or Chile) with Allyson Goose ’00 and teach English, work for a newspaper or find some way to earn money and volunteer.

Heather Glidden: I will be traveling around Europe this summer and then coming back to find a job somewhere, somehow.

Nathan Gotman: I’m doing research in Bioinformatics this summer at Iowa State. I’m going to live in Grinnell next year and work probably in Des Moines or Iowa City.

Katie Groark: I’m either going to be volunteering in a homeless shelter in Ireland or teaching elementary school kids in the south of France.

Ming Gu: I’ll be joining the Ph.D. program in Computation & Neural System at Caltech. I’m planning to mainly focus on system neuroscience, especially a reductionist study of the neural correlates of consciousness.

Preeti Gupta: I will be going to grad school at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor for a Ph.D. program in Ancient History.

Megan Hagenauer: I’ll be (hopefully) in Madison, WI living in a co-op (Nottingham?) and working at a middle school daycamp while looking for a more permanent neuroscience research position. And reading fiction. Yeah fiction!

Erin Hart: I accepted a fellowship from the Robert Bosch Foundation to teach English and American Studies at a German university next year.

Elysia Hassebroek: I’m working for Oxford University, mapping the Abyss at the South Pole. Yeah, I’m going to make mad bank.

Kristie D. Henderson: I’m getting married to the man of my dreams (Sherman P. Willis class of ’01) and boyfriend of four years! And then I’m going to work at some dead end job until he finishes law school.

Joe Herrold: I will be attending Drake University Law School.

Mariah Hibarger: Current plans are completing the rafting season in CO for Bill Dvorak’s kayak and rafting expeditions, then two months rafting and kayaking in West Virginia, then down to South America for rafting season and hopefully out to Japan with my two brothers in summer of 2004 for the boating season out there.

Jane Hooper: I’m joining the Peace Corps and teaching English in Africa for the next two years.

Per Janson: I'm going to spend next year looking for things to do next year.

Jon Jeffryes: My plans for next year are to move to Madison and hopefully enter the University of Wisconsin’s Library and Information Sciences Graduate Program.

Ben Jones: Next year I will be entering the Ph.D. statistics program at Iowa State University.

Kat Jones: I’m attending UMass Amherst to get a graduate degree in Sociology.

Patrick Knoedler: I don’t know for sure but it is one of two things: buy a VW bus and be a surf bum in Cali, or go to medical school — I haven’t decided yet.

Ann Kolbeck: Taking a year off before grad school and learning Sanskrit while entombed within the confines of some kind of office job.

John Lentz: After Grinnell, I am going to find temporary work, then probably live in Antarctica for a while. I'm serious.

Kristin Lewis: I’m doing fieldwork in Australia and moving to Phoenix with a friend.

Tiffany Lewis: I’ll be attending Brooklyn Law School in Brooklyn, Iowa. D’oh! I mean New York.

Tim Lin: I will be staying and working in Grinnell next year.

Tina Lim: Put law school on hold, work somewhere for a year, and apply to graduate school for education somewhere in the East Coast.

Jill Lofchie: I will be living in my parents’ house in Boston and working. Where I will be working I do not know, but I hope to work in the non-profit world doing some type of community or family mediation.

Rebecca Lucero: is having a panic attack even thinking about this question. But damn, she'll do great.

Mark Lundgren: I am going to Namibia to work at the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia. I will be doing computer and webpage maintenance and helping to teach a research workshop to Namibian undergraduate students.

Mayra Madriz: Going WEST! After doing a summer job in Santa Cruz, I will move to San Francisco to get involved with a development organization. A year after graduation, I plan to pursue a master’s program with a concentration on Latin American Studies.

Katie Mears: Working for Howard Dean’s campaign in Iowa someplace for as long as he’s in the race then who knows. Something farther away.

Stephanie Meleady: Next year, I am going to be in Grinnell, student and substitute teaching. I am applying for an English assistantship in France for the following year.

Katherine Michaelsen: I plan to go abroad for a year, either to China or Sweden, and then eventually attend medical school.

Patrick Midtlyng: I’m going to be at the University of Chicago, studying in the Linguistics Ph.D. program.

Lise-marie Monroe: I’m moving to Chicago to use my degree as it should be used . . . waiting tables. During that time I will also be training to become an inspirational speaker and I will continue to search for and explore career opportunities.

Noe Montez: I will be attending grad school at Indian University, aiming to acquire an M.A. in Theatre before moving onto the Ph.D.

Javed Murad: I will be working as an Analyst for Analysis Group, a consulting firm, at their offices in Boston, Mass.

Colleen Naeger: I will be spending next year working as a research technician in the pediatric department of Washington University Medical Center/Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO. Then, I plan on attending graduate school to earn my Ph.D. in some area of biomedical research.

Katie Naset: I’m going to law school, but somewhere that is yet to be determined. Ahhh the joys of the largest law school applicant pool in history.

Arlie Nuetzel: Most likely engineering graduate school at either Washington U, or Michigan, if I get in there.

Eve Obert: I will be getting a clerical job of some kind in the Twin Cities and finding an apartment. In short, I shall be joining the real world.

Cynthia Odendahl: I plan on putting myself out there to be “blown about by the winds” next year.

Mike Olson: Next year I will be studying philosophy at Villanova.

Joseph Oppong: I will be working for Ernst & Young in Minneapolis. I will also be getting a Master of Accounting degree from the McIntire School of Commerce in the University of Virginia.

Marie Opsahl-Lister: Next year I’ll be living and working in Madison, Wisconsin . . . if Jon Jeffryes will let me sleep on his floor that is. How about it Jon? Jon?? Jon?!?

Terry Osborn: I secured a fellowship with the PIRGS for the next two years. I will be doing a number of things—from lobbying to press conferences—and am unsure where I will be placed.

Thomas Parr: I am going to Namibia with Grinnell Corps for one year where I will work for the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia.

Katrina Pedersen: I'll be living in IIlinois either working as a hospital laboratory technician or enrolling in medical school this fall.

Nancy Pellowski: I am going to live in Albany, NY for the summer, and then go into the Peace Corps Aug 31. I know I am going to the Caribbean and I am going to do some type of community development (working with at-risk youth and families), but I am not sure what specific country or job title yet.

Amanda Perry: I will be student teaching middle school math as part of the 9th semester student teaching program in the fall. In the spring, I’m planning to volunteer at a school in Washington D.C. and from there, I’m not sure but I’m thinking Americorps.

Jill Peterson: Moving to New York City . . . probably working for the Federal Capital Defenders Office.

Tony Pham: I look forward to working with MTV Asia in Singapore this summer while I wait for final word on my candidacy to be a U.S. Student Fulbright Scholar to research "The Business and Politics of Fashion in Vietnam."

Alison Phillips: I am going to be a “visiting research specialist” at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign for a psychologist who studies cognitive aging. I’ll be “visiting” for two years.

Katie Pieper: I’m working at a ranch in Colorado over the summer, then working as a union organizer for a year, then law school (don’t know which one yet).

Adam Portilla: I’ll be in Chicago, doing my best to whore out my photoshop skills and possibly attending film school.

Jon Rathsam: I’m going to study acoustics at the University of Nebraska, in Omaha.

Jessica Redding: I’ll be getting married in August and moving to Missoula, Montana to work full-time and be with my husband while he attends grad. school. After that, it’ll be my turn, and I’ll go to grad school to achieve a Master’s Degree in Art Therapy.

Peter Rhee: Med school in Missouri and a 2nd Lt. in the Medical Service Corp of the United States Air Force, cause they’ll pay for it all so that I can achieve my goals of getting chicks, money, power, and chicks.

Jesse Richardson: I’ll be living in Manhattan, pursing a Ph.D. in Pharmacology at Columbia University. My intended focus is Neuropharmaceuticals.

Rania Heather Robb: After graduation I will move to Des Moines and take classes at Drake University. I am working towards certification as a child life specialist.

Jess Rochester: I am going to work at the Sunflower Fields Farm CSA from June until November—after November, who knows?!! At the CSA I will be planting, harvesting, and distributing food for the 10 grower CSA in northeast Iowa following organic regulations.

Barbi Rodriguez: I’m teaching (middle school language arts?) in New York City.

Gabe Rosenberg: I will be studying American History at Brown University.

Esther Rosenow: MEGALOMANIA, continued pedantic assault of the ungrammatical, maybe some peanut butter and a new couch, etc.

Stephanie Schmidt: I will be pursuing my Ph.D. in Geosciences at Penn State University as a BRIE (Biogeochemical Research Initiative for Education) research fellow.

Rob Schwaller: Next year I will be a graduate student at Penn State University where I will be working towards earning a Ph.D. in history. I will also be a graduate assistant for the history department.

Jessica Shireman: I’m going to apply for dental school.

Suzy Shmagin: Next year I will be heading off to law school to study disability/special education law, as well as gay rights issues. At the moment, I am currently choosing between schools, so I cannot be specific as to where I will be studying.

Johnathon Smith: I will spend the next school term in France taking part in a French Assistantship Program, where I will serve as a English language assistant to high schoolers.

Izabela Staicut: I will start graduate school at New York University — Tisch School of the Arts and will be doing a Master’s program in Interactive Telecommunications.

Freya Stein: As far as future plans go, this summer I will be the Avian Nursery intern at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville, Minn., which means I’ll help medicate, feed, and rehabilitate (physically and behaviorally) baby birds. I’ll also be applying to veterinary school, hopefully to attend in fall of 2004.

Erin Stutelberg: In the Fall I will be student-teaching 7th-graders in Grinnell to be critical readers of their worlds. I will appreciate them for the middle schoolers they are because it’s about time they got the respect they deserve.

Joa Taylor: I will be serving in AmeriCorps at the Hennepin County Multi-Cultural Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Sylvia Techavalitpongse: Going back home to Las Vegas, NV and be a blackjack dealer by day, stripper by night. Just kidding. At this point, my plans are to figure out the rest of my life . . . at least try and find some direction. Hopefully get into PR or advertising.

Alisa Tennessen: I’m going to the University of Minnesota law school.

Tharaphi Than: I’ll be in Ahmedabad, India for summer, working with Self Employed Women’s Association. Hopefully, I will be in London doing M.A. in South East Asian Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies.

Gus Torres: I’m going to law school at the University of Texas.

L.T. Tortora: I’m going to Georgetown, where I’ll be working on an M.A. in security studies, with a focus on international security.

Emily Trask: I’m going to act on a one year intern contract with the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre (and of course—eating as much cheese and drinking as much sweet sweet Miller beer as possible. Hey, when in Rome ...)

Rus Trusewych: I am going to hang out here this summer, roof and make paintings. Then do the Art Department’s 9th semester fellowship in sculpture.

Boram Um: I'll be working as a chemistry or biochemistry research assistant in New York City area.

Eric Utecht: I’ll be teaching English in New York City with Teach For America.

Aaron Virshup: I’ll be studying biophysics in the fantastically boring and flat city of Urbana-Champaign.

Alacia Welch: I will most likely be living in Seattle or Oregon or maybe even Illinois looking for a job that I find interesting. No matter what though, I’ll be enriching my life with experiences that can only be had outside of school!

Austin Wells: I am going to be student teaching at Tama High School for Anthopology and American History. I also plan on inciting riots.

Mike Wells: Planning to go to Europe in the summer, then spending the year working as a massage therapist and taking some easy/fun classes before going off to chiropractic college.

Nate Wentz: I’m becoming a monk. You got a problem with that?

Alison Williams: I will be returning to Grinnell next year to student teach third grade at Davis Elementary.

Nathan Williams: I’m going to Harvard Divinity School to begin a Master of Divinity, which is the standard masters degree for entering the Christian (Presbyterian, to be exact) ministry.

Jenni Wu: I will be planning my secret wedding to Mike Zabel ’03.

Courtney Wyly: I am expecting my invitation to Peace Corps any day now. My place will be in the Caribbean where I will be learning French and participating in a health extension program. However, if I do not get an invitation, I will be working in Houston, TX in the Medical Center for next year before starting a Post-Baccalaureate program which would prepare me for medical school.

Sarah Young: I’ll hopefully get a waitressing job in Nashville, Tenn., as well as doing data entry and giving tours at the Hermitage (home of Andrew Jackson).

Mike Zabel: Next year I will be living in my parents’ basement and working at a car wash, or studying the mating behaviors of baboons for a prestigious university grad school program.

Emily Zabor: After graduation, I am going to volunteer with the Peace Corps and will work on agriculture and forestry projects in a country in sub-Saharan Africa.

Dinah Zebot: I will be working as the executive assistant to the directors at the Chicago Foundation for Women, one of the largest regional women’s funds in the country. The Foundation raises funds to provide grants for women’s programs, and is dedicated to increasing resources and promoting positive social change for women and girls. After a couple of years, I plan to go back to school to pursue a Ph.D. in Public Policy.

Yang Zhang: I will be Studying Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, while creating the optimal moment to drop out of school and go into indie filmmaking.
