Flags no longer fly from dorms: New Student Affairs policy bans hanging anything out windows
Joe Hashmall and Nate Jones, both ’06, have a picture of themselves dressed as pirates taped to the outside of their door. In the background is an innocuous-looking pirate flag. That flag used to hang outside their window, on the fourth floor of Norris. Hashmall bought the flag over fall break, and hung it up shortly after returning. [more]

Need-sensitivity? Admissions may start looking at international students’ bank accounts
“It happens every year,” explained Eric Staab, the Associate Dean of Admission and Coordinator of International Admission. A perfectly admissible candidate from, say, Malawi, who has $3000 to commit to their education, applies to Grinnell. The candidate is admitted, and given half-tuition—the most that an international applicant can receive in aid. The Malawian accepts the offer, and enrolls. [more]

Trustees meet
Grinnell’s Board of Trustees approved a four percent increase in the comprehensive fee and looked into a variety of other issues at a meeting in Carefree, Ariz. last weekend. [more]

Grinnellians register with INS: New federal immigration requirements on visitors from Islamic countries take up students’ time and energy
At 6:40 Tuesday morning, four Grinnell students gathered at the Forum parking lot to travel to Des Moines for their 8 a.m. appointment with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). Under new policies passed after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, male international students of certain nationalities are now subject to special registration with the INS. [more]

SPARC faces reform: As students go to the polls to select next year’s student publications and radio committee, current members are revising the committee’s duties
In 1998, the chair of the Student Publications and Radio Committee (SPARC) resigned, citing overwork. Jon Petitt ’01, then a sophomore, stepped into the vacant position. [more]
