Roy*, a senior at Grinnell, came to terms with his sexual orientation relatively early. “Since elementary school,” he said, “[I’ve known] whom I was attracted to.”

Through the trenches
Suzy, a senior, knew she was gay before she knew what gay was. All she knew as a kindergartener was that she wanted to marry a little girl in second grade. When the little girl moved away, it “broke [her] heart.” When she learned what it meant to be gay in first or second grade, “I just knew I was gay,” Suzy said.
