Storage Server
Overview
The storage server, a computer managed by ITS, is accessible from both on and off campus. Each student is given a directory on the server, in which he or she can store files for retrieval at any time. ITS highly recommends the use of the storage server because it can effectively replace use of diskettes or CDs, storage solutions which are susceptible to loss or physical damage. Files stored on the storage server are backed up regularly and are protected by a battery backup system. Your folder is limited to 200MB. If you exceed this limit and cannot access your folder to delete items, you must contact ITS. Choose your operating system in the pane to the left to begin connecting to the storage server.
Other Means
Some people prefer to use other means to transport data. These may include optical media (CDs or DVDs) or USB devices ("thumb-drives" or portable hard drives). While all of these methods are superior to floppy disks, they are all susceptible to hardware failure, especially when carried in a backpack or pocket. For these reasons, ITS highly recommends the use of the Storage Server to store your data. The server is protected by a battery backup, redundant hard disks, and is regularly backed up on to tape.
