Connecting to ResNet

Image of LEDs ResNet is Grinnell College's Residential Computer Network. All students in campus housing will have access to this network if they have brought a computer to campus. In 2004, there were approximately 1100 computers connected to the ResNet. Through ResNet we allow some connections to campus printing and network storage, but it is mainly for internet connection.

All new students must attend a one-time orientation conducted by Information Technology Services prior to registering on ResNet. In addition, each resident must agree to abide by the "Computer Use Policy" by signing an acknowledgement form. Once these requirements are met, online registration can be completed. You will need to fill out a registration and be authorized prior to accessing the network. Once you connect your computer to the wall jack, open a browser window and it will automatically go to this registration. You will not be able to use the internet service until this step is complete.

Its Easy to Connect!

Just set up your computer and follow the checklist below to connect to ResNet. Please remember you must have a valid account username and password, know your dorm, room number and jack number. Select your operating system from the "Connection Guides" to the left.

Connection Checklist

The following items are required in order to connect to ResNet. Once youare sure that you have all of them, choose the appropriate guide from the "Connection Guides" panel to the left.

  • Attendance at an orientation session (new students only) - sessions are offered during new student orientation.
  • A 10Mbps or 10/100Mbps network interface card (NIC). Macintoshes have built in NICs, as well as most laptops produced within the last few years. Similarly, most Windows PCs come with one installed. See below if you don't have or are not sure if you have a NIC
  • An Ethernet cable long enough to reach the wall jack from your computer. These cables are available at the bookstore.

I don't have a NIC

Network interface cards are available at the bookstore or at the CDW Grinnell website. The Grinnell College Helpdesk can assist with installation of network cards.
