Pilobolus Dance Theatre brings its unique style to Grinnell College
GRINNELL, Iowa - "Tsu-ku-Tsu" has been reviewed as a dance with "cartwheels and super high springs [to] create a kaleidoscope of bodies in motion …" by the Los Angeles Times. And to watch the Pilobolus Dance Theatre at their upcoming show at Grinnell College is to see an artistic majesty of movements, touched with a tad of humor and a lot of raw athleticism, in its simplicity.
The Grinnell College presentation of Pilobolus Dance Theatre, to include "Tsu-ku-Tsu,," will be Wednesday, January 30 and Thursday, January 31. A similar program will begin each night at 8 p.m.-doors open at 7:30 p.m.-at Roberts Theatre, Bucksbaum Center for the Arts, Grinnell College. Critically acclaimed "Tsu-ku-Tsu" was co-funded by the University of Iowa's Hancher Auditorium and features an original taiko drum score by Leonard Eto.
The productions are free of charge and open to the general public, however tickets will be necessary. For ticket information call 641-269-4444 or via email at boxofc@grinnell.edu.
A modern-dance troupe founded in the U.S. in 1971, the troupe is a collaborative effort of four artistic directors and six dancers who collectively choreograph surreal body-sculptures with a mixture of dance, gymnastics, and mime to produce such effects as in "Tsu-ku-Tsu.

A major American dance company, Pilobolus has received a number of prestigious honors, including the Berlin Critic's Prize and a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in cultural programming for its deeply committed collaborative effort between its four artistic directors and six dancers.
But perhaps its greatest testament to fame is the fact that so many major dance companies from around the world -such as Italy's Verona Ballet and the Ballet national de Nancy et de Lorraine in France, and the Arizona Ballets in the U.S.-have copied their style.
The 2001-2002 tour of the Pilobolus Dance Theatre has been funded by the generous support of MetLife.
