Noted Archaeologist Phi Beta Kappa visiting Scholar at Grinnell College
GRINNELL, Iowa - Noted prehistoric archaeologist and Guggenheim Fellow Elizabeth Barber, is the Phi Beta Kappa visiting Scholar at Grinnell College from April 23-26.
Barber, a professor of anthropology at Occidental College, Los Angeles, Calif., and the author of four award-winning books, including "Women's Work-The First 20,000 Years," (W.W. Norton; 1994), will give the Convocation Lecture, "The Mummies of Chinese Turkestan," at 11 a.m. on April 25 at the Harris Center Lecture Hall, Grinnell College.
Also known for her work in archaeological linguistics and ancient textiles and costumes, Barber will give a lecture titled "Where Did You Get that Hat, My Dear?" at 4:15 p.m., April 25, in the Forum South Lounge.
The guest curator of "Mothers of Invention: 25 Millennia of Textile Innovation," recently shown at the Museum for Textiles, Toronto, Barber has been elected to membership in the Centre internationale d'étube des textiles anciens. She is also a former board member of the Textile Society of America, and a former president of the Southern California chapter, Archaeological Institute of America.
Barber has received grants from the NEH and the Getty, Mellon, and Haynes foundations.
