Tenor virtuoso, Ian Bostridge, to sing at Grinnell College

GRINNELL, Iowa - Just eight years ago, Ian Bostridge was attending school at Oxford, studying seventeenth-century witchcraft. Now, internationally renowned for his versatility and virtuosity as a tenor, he has bewitched the music world by developing into one of the world's great tenors.

Bostridge, along with collaborator Julius Drake on piano, will present a recital of songs by Franz Schubert on Wednesday, April 17, at 8 p.m., Sebring-Lewis Hall, Grinnell College. The recital is free and open to the general public, but tickets are required. For tickets and information call the Bucksbaum Center for the Arts ticket office at 641-269-4444.

The Grinnell College visit is the only Iowa appearance and one of only six included in the North American tour, which ends at Carnegie Hall, New York city, on May 5.

Acclaimed for his performances of German lieder and English folk songs, Bostridge has performed in operas by Mozart and Britten, and in choral works by Handel and Haydn. He has recorded Schubert Lieder and Schumann Lieder, which earned him the Gramophone Award in 1998, and in 1997 he filmed "Winterreise" with David Alden. His book "Witchcraft and its Transformations 1650-1750" was published by Oxford University in 1997.

Julius Drake, Bostridge's frequent collaborator, has previously performed at Grinnell College with musicians Wolfgang Holzmair, Jill Gomez, and Nicholas Daniel.
