BRITISH COLUMBIA: Pacific Northwest Canada Costal Studies

The Barkley and Clayoquot Sound region of Vancouver Island provides a laboratory for exploring the relationship between ecosystems and the local economy. The coastal rainforest system and its associated marine environment that form the economic base of the area are threatened by logging industry practices resulting in destruction of the capacities of the ecosystems upon which the livelihood of the local population depends. The focus of the SFS Coastal Studies program is on issues related to community watershed planning and management in coastal ecosystems. Course material is integrated in case studies focusing on local environmental problems and resource conflicts. Students are registered for four courses: Coastal Ecology; Principles of Resource Management; Economic and Ethical Issues of Sustainable Development; and Directed Research. Faculty lectures are supplemented by guest lectures, including local resource managers and researchers, representatives of logging concerns and salmon fishermen, First Nation elders, and community leaders. Days are spent in a combination of lectures, field exercises, and research in temperate forests, lakes, beaches, and coasts. Every student completes and presents a directed research project based on research techniques, statistics, and scientific writing learned at the SFS Center. Opportunities are provided for involvement in the local community and tutoring in schools in both the Canadian and First Nation communities. Accommodation is provided in shared rooms at the SFS Center. Eligibility: At least one course in environmental studies or biology highly recommended. Commitment to understanding environmental issues. Willingness to live and work in groups.
