Russia:
Krasnodar
The ACM Krasnodar program is based at Kuban State University in
the city of Krasnodar, a city of almost one million in the region
of Kuban, situated near the the newly independent republics of the
Caucasus. Students live alongside the diverse residents of Krasnodar
and are able to observe firsthand day-by-day the historic political
and economic changes taking place in the new Russia. Contacts with
foreigners are few, and interaction with Russians are numerous,
close, and informal. The academic program is a combination of intensive
Russian language study and an area studies course, Introduction
to Russian Society. Both courses feature guest lectures and numerous
field excursions. Language class size is limited to five to nine
students. A major component is the individual project on a topic
growing out of students' experiences with the people and culture
of the region. Internships and volunteer opportunities are also
available. Major field trips are taken to Moscow and St. Petersburg
as well as the Black Sea. Housing is provided in homestays with
Russian families, who provide breakfast and dinner each day. Eligibility:
Minimum of one year of Russian.
