MADRID: Hamilton College in Spain

Hamilton College in Spain is a rigorous program dedicated to maintaining the standards of the member colleges of its academic consortium, Hamilton, Williams, Swarthmore, Amherst, and Haverford. Courses are designed specifically for the students on the program and are taught in small classes by members of the Facultad de Filosofia y Letras of the Universidad Compultense de Madrid or other authorities in the humanities, history, and the arts. Students take four courses per semester selected from a wide range of offerings in Spanish language, literature, and civilization, which include classes in history and art history, political science, economics, anthropology, and sociology. Independent study may be arranged by students who wish to work on individual projects. All courses are taught entirely in Spanish and the language must be spoken at all times, both in and outside of class. All students are required to sign a pledge to this effect before their arrival in Madrid. Internships are available, allowing students to immerse themselves more fully in the social and cultural environment of Madrid in such areas as education, health care, and social work. The program offers an unusually large number of academically structured field trips and excursions throughout the semester, beginning with the 10-day orientation on the north or south coast. Other destinations have included Granada, Segovia, Salamanca, Toledo, Seville, Cordoba, Avila, and Santiago de Compostela, among others. Housing is provided in homestays with carefully selected Spanish families. Eligibility: Minimum GPA of 3.0. 300-level Spanish.
