LONDON: Grinnell-in-London (spring)

The Grinnell-in-London Spring program (GIL) is the college's international branch campus located in the heart of London, one of the world's most cultured, diverse, and exciting cities. The program site itself, located in the West End theatre district near the British Museum, has modern, full-equipped classrooms, computer laboratory, audio-video facilities, library and student lounges. The academic program offers courses and an internship that may be used for major or cognate credit towards majors in a number of departments. The variety of internships available is almost limitless, from women's rights to urban housing issues to international law to public health. However, parliamentary internships are not available in the spring, only on the fall program. The semester is divided into two 8-week phases: during Phase I, students earn 10 credits in three courses and conduct an independent study. During Phase I, classes are held Monday through Thursday, allowing for three-day weekends for exploring London, going on course-related fieldtrips or doing academic fieldwork. In Phase II, students participate in an internship Monday-Thursday, 8am-5pm earning 4 credits and participate in a 2-credit seminar discussing the internship experience. Part of the GIL curriculum changes annually to reflect the expertise of that year's participating Grinnell faculty members while regular courses in social studies and the humanities are taught each year by resident faculty in London. The program sponsors a wide variety of extra-curricular activities ranging from public interest groups to sports and music. Each student receives membership to the University of London Student Union, a favorite gathering-place for British students as well as to the International Students' House, an activity center for the large and diverse international student population in London. Housing is provided in fully furnished shared apartments or students may elect to seek out their own accommodation. GIL provides a number of subsidies to substantially reduce the cost of transatlantic airfare and travel within London. All course-related transportation is fully covered. Eligibility: At least second-year student status. Minimum GPA of 2.75.
