LONDON: London
School of Economics & Political Science (year only)
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is one
of the largest schools of the University of London, with an outstanding
international reputation in economics and social sciences as well
as history, law, and philosophy. The work of the LSE concerns the
social sciences in the broadest sense, both theoretical and empirical,
quantitative and humanistic. The institution is cosmopolitan in
character with over half of its 6,000 students and many of its faculty
coming from over 30 countries. The LSE is located in the heart of
London at the nexus of the commercial, financial and legal districts
and the centers of government. "The General Course" is a fully integrated,
one-year program of study for study-abroad students from universities
in other countries. Each student is assigned to a personal tutor,
an adviser in the student's major department who provides both academic
support and advising on course selection. Students have a great
deal of freedom in choosing courses and may take any four year-long
undergraduate courses from a total of more than 420 offerings. Two
of the four courses are normally from the student's major department
but all four courses may be taken in different fields. Teaching
consists of lectures, seminars, and individual or small group tutorials
with a heavy emphasis on independent study. Students are required
to take final examinations covering the entire year in three of
the four classes taken. Housing is in dormitories or apartments.
Eligibility: Minimum GPA of 3.3. Recommendation of department and
permission from Grinnell to study off campus for a full year.
