LONDON:
London & Florence Arts in Context (spring)
The ACM London and Florence Program offers an interdisciplinary
panorama of the arts and history during a semester divided between
the two cities, spending eight weeks in each. Focused on a variety
of artistic media – architecture, painting, sculpture, literature
and theatre – the program enables students to view art in its social
context. By comparing the dramatically different styles of London
and Florence, students learn how architecture, painting, and sculpture
both reflect and influence cultural and political values. In Florence
students view famous galleries, museums, churches, and public buildings
and travel to both Rome and Siena while learning about the influence
of Italian history on Italian art and architecture. Housing is provided
in homestays as a complement to a course in Italian. An optional
three-week program of intensive Italian is available in January
for students starting the program in Florence. (The program may
be started in either city.) In London, in addition to a focus on
art and architecture, incorporating visits to the important buildings,
neighborhoods and museums, the program features a course in theatre.
Students experience a variety of productions and venues, from the
Royal Shakespeare Company and current plays in West End theaters
to avant-garde productions and music hall. Group housing is provided
in London. A one-week break is provided between the halves of the
program, allowing for independent travel. Eligibility: Coursework
in art history, theatre, studio art, history, and literature recommended.
