GREECE:
College Year in Athens (semester or year)
College Year in Athens (CYA), which admits students for single semesters,
is an independent study abroad program focusing on Greece and the
world of the Eastern Mediterranean. The courses offered cover periods
from ancient times to the present in the fields of archaeology,
art history, classical languages, ethnography, history, literature,
Modern Greek language, philosophy, political science, and religion.
From a central vantage point at the confluence of Europe, Asia,
the Middle East and Africa, students immerse themselves in the traditional
humanistic disciplines while studying and observing the changes
taking place around them in today's Athens, a bustling city of four
million. CYA faculty are assembled from a group of distinguished
scholars who lecture and discuss course material in English. To
help students plan an academically integrated program of study,
the curriculum is organized in two tracks, Ancient Greek Civilization
and Mediterranean Studies, and students are advised to choose their
courses within a single track. Ancient Greek Art and Archeology
as well as Modern Greek Language are open to all students, regardless
of track. The Ancient Greek Civilization track offers Ancient Greek
and Advanced Latin as well as more than twenty other courses, including
ancient literature, art and architecture, history, philosophy, and
religion. Mediterranean Studies includes Byzantine history, art,
and architecture as well as courses in modern Greek literature,
history, politics, society, Middle Eastern and Balkan studies. Individually
supervised research projects are available for adequately prepared
students, within the framework of either track, on topics not covered
in formal courses. Faculty led study trips include sites in Attica,
Crete, the Peloponnese, central Greece, and Macedonia as well as
guided visits to locales in and around Athens itself. CYA organizes
co- and extra-curricular activities including attendance at theatrical
performances, Greek cooking and dancing, dinners with Greek families
and social events with Greek students. Housing is provided in shared
student apartments near CYA facilities in central Athens. Eligibility:
Strong preparatory coursework in art, history, humanities or classics.
