KENYA: SEMESTER PROGRAM

The St. Lawrence University program in Kenya offers an intensive, cross-cultural learning opportunity by carefully blending classroom and academic field experiences. The program balances the study of urban and rural areas, cultural diversity, and environmental issues. Course topics include Kenyan peoples and cultures, women's studies, philosophy, political science, religion, environmental resource management, history, sociology, and Kiswahili, the national language. Field studies, concentrating on pastoralist culture and economics, form the foundation for a one-month internship or a field course culminating in a major research project. Students are housed in homestays in three different ethnic groups and geographical regions. Eligibility: At least one course in African studies is highly advised. Students are also expected to complete independent readings suggested by St. Lawrence University prior to participation in the program. Telephone interview required.
