MUSIC DEPARTMENT STUDENT INFORMATION

In the course of their studies at Grinnell, students majoring in music will develop:

1) The ability to apply theoretical, stylistic, and cultural information to the study of music from diverse traditions;
2) The ability to listen critically;
3) The ability to write and speak about music effectively;
4) The ability to discover parallels, connections, and relationships between music and other disciplines;
5) An understanding of the value of music in community life;
6) An understanding of the workings of tonal music;
7) The ability to apply computer technology appropriately to musical studies;
8) A substantial understanding of at least one area- theory, composition, and technology; cultural and historical studies; or performance.

Track goals:
theory, composition, and technology
ability to notate and create music and explain musical structure applying stylistic standards, concepts, and appropriate tools
cultural and historical studies
ability to study musical behavior (artistic and social) in the complex realities of societal context
performance
ability to perform on an instrument or voice with technical fluency and stylistic sensitivity

Students declare a major at the end of their second year of studies. Most music majors choose an area of emphasis and present a senior project in that specialty representing the culmination of their studies in the Department. Areas of emphasis include performance, historical and cultural studies, composition and technology, or an independent specialty designed by the student in consultation with her or his advisor.

Major requirements:

  • a minimum of 36 credits in music
  • a minimum of 4 credits in private lesson instruction (included in the 36 above)
  • Mus 112: Harmony
  • Mus 116: Music, Culture, Context
  • Two 200-level historical and cultural studies courses (Western music history and area studies in world music)
  • One 200-level theory or composition course
  • At least three additional music courses (12 credits) at the 200 level or above excluding private and group lessons and ensembles, including 4 or more credits at the 300 level or above
  • Senior Project (optional beginning in 2002-03)
